My reading of it is that a guest poster is claiming that because a restaurant might be open it follows that no-one's starving - make what you will of that bit of logic. (Tip - treat every day on social media and forums like it's April Fools day). The bit about genocide is that by definition it isn't that, the poster isn't claiming that people aren't being killed, just questioning your use of the term.
Not sure what the picture of bombing in Syria is there for, possibly an example of actual genocide, the poster gave no explanation.
In WW2, the rich ate in restaurants while the rest suffered a restricted diet on rations. That's a fact. I'm sure the same applies in Gaza. Don't forget that most of the Strip is untouched by bombs.
And 90% of the people who lived in Gaza, well over two million, have been displaced.
That will leave 10% of them OK...possibly better off now than they were before. There will always be a minority of people who either don't care or positively use others sufferings for their own advantage.
This is what happens in war. Those displaced are already returning. Let's hope they get the chance to rebuild their lives and have some peace. But with Hamas already seeking out people to execute in public I doubt that.
Of course all wars are horrendous and innocent people die, then, now and in the future...sadly that's the way of mankind.
The displaced are returning, but to what? No homes, no businesses, some to no family.
If it's your child, parent, sibling, that is injured, starved or dead, I dont think it matters whether it was 80 years ago in Auschwitz or last week in Gaza....the pain is still the same.
I find some of the comments in this thread regarding thePalestinians, heartless to be honest.
I have replied to Digger and Madders on the appropriate thread not to go off topic but I agree with you completely especially the BIB.
No.one is disregarding what happened on October 7th by admitting the truth of the awful prolonged bombing and starving of innocent Palestinian civilians. Benjamin Netanyahu had to be stopped, he was the aggressor , so many countries United to stop the atrocious killing because it WAS a genocide which has been confirmed on the Palestinian thread.
You may not agree with that Syl but thank you for bringing some much needed clarity to the thread because I was genuinely confused about the denial of fact, logic and empathy.

Why aren't other, more deadly and destructive wars not called genocide?
What makes Gaza different than Syria or Yemen?
My guess is anything/anywhere that doesn’t involve Jews.
eg “ over 52,000 Christians in Nigeria have reportedly been targeted and killed by Islamist extremists while about 34,000 moderate non-Fulani Muslims have been murdered in Islamist attacks since 2009.

I found the second article in particular absolutely horrendous. Prison is not enough.
Even her 70 year old grandfather raped that little girl.
The great shame is we stopped capital punishment in the (suprisingly recent) 1990's.
Apart from the obvious the saddest part was reading that after she told her “mother” she then started abusing her.
How, in God’s name, does anyone get over abuse like that?

“Failure to bring order to borders is eroding the public's confidence in politicians, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will warn today.

There has been a surge of online racism against non white footballers so they have chosen to take the knee again.
What people wonder is what has caused the huge rise in racist rhetoric. Maybe it's simply that such speech has become normalised by the right especially extreme far right party Reform . I don't understand why anyone is the slightest bit surprised. If you condone xenophobia in political discourse, have so many news reports taking an anti immigrant stance then the racists that do exist in this country feel comfortable being openly racist. Why wouldn't they? The idea has been raised about identity checks emerging on social media platforms although I'm not sure how that would be managed.
If people taking the knee are doing so thinking it will lessen the racist rhetoric, that certainly won't happen. It will probably increase it. So is it a worthwhile gesture anymore?
I think yes, if footballers whether they be people of colour or not want to show solidarity they shouldn't let bigoted keyboard warriors stop them.
And in his exclusive interview, Mr Masters raised concerns about the anonymity of social media users posting abuse and questioned whether identity checks were now necessary.
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has told Sky News players will take the knee at this weekend's matches amid ongoing discussions about whether the anti-racism move is still effective.
Captains of the 20 clubs are understood to back the move, although players could decide individually to opt out.
The majority of Women's Super League teams recently decided against taking the knee in games marking Black History Month, feeling it was no longer meaningful amid a rise in racism.

Racism has been around since we first got tribal. It'll still be around when the sun explodes. Yeah, it's not nice. Neither are a lot of things. People aren't nice. Give me a dog any day.
But all this pearl clutching over something that's not new, and won't be changed unless individual responsibility it taken, is just fruitless....and boring. I've seen enough black racism towards whites to last me a fucking lifetime. I've even experienced it first hand.

"A woman is alleged to have been raped on Brighton beach by three asylum seekers.
Police received a report that a 33-year-old woman had been attacked on the lower esplanade in Brighton at around 5am on October 4.
Three men – Abdulla Ahmadi, 25, an Iranian national from Crewe, and Karin Al-Danasurt, 20, and Ibrahim Alshafe, 25, both Eqyptian nationals from Horsham – were arrested and each charged with two counts of rape.
All three men arrived in the UK via small boats and had had pending decisions on asylum claims, the Home Office has confirmed.
At Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, Mr Al-Danasurt and Mr Alshafe gave their address as an asylum hotel in a village near Horsham.
The court heard Al-Danasurt is being investigated for suspected immigration offences. He confirmed his name and date of birth through an Arabic interpreter and was remanded to appear at Lewes Crown Court next month.
Failed asylum seeker Alshafe confirmed his name and date of birth through an Arabic interpreter and was also remanded to appear at Lewes Crown Court next month.
Failed asylum seeker Ahmadi appeared in a separate hearing at Brighton Magistrates’ Court. He confirmed his name and date of birth through a Kurdish interpreter and was remanded to appear at Lewes Crown Court next month."

I agree completely that the West has lost any sense of spirituality ,it's been drowned out by capitalism and the mindless chatter on social media. We have lost our connection to ourselves, nature and to other people, to treat others with basic kindness. The problem is it's easy to show compassion to people who think like us and and don't challenge our world view. People need to adopt compassion for those who live and think differently , and may possibly need our help. One of life 's biggest rewards is helping others, and showing kindness to them.
Due to climate change we are even destroying the beautiful place that has provided us with life , and we don't even consider how extraordinary it is that Earth has all the physical components for nature to grow and sustain life. It's a miracle if we stop to think about it but we have chosen to squander what we were given by slowly destroying the planet, hurting nature and wildlife and generally polluting the Earth with our excesses(by we I don't mean us as individuals but as a collective species)
However I went on a slight tangent there..!
White people have not experienced racism on the same level as people of colour. You cannot achieve collective responsibility without first achieving individual responsibility and in fairness that has occurred. Many people are not racist. But how can those people influence others who have people based on the way they look? Such hatred is irrational and rooted in disdain. Racists believe people of colour are beneath them just because they have darker skin. Such thinking is absurd, how can you reach these people? If they hate a race based on their skin colour that hate will be difficult to challenge because the hate is based on something the person of colour cannot change and is not hate worthy in the first place.
Those who are in a position to be bored about others "pearl clutching" ( a term which mocks people caring about something )about racism are truly removed from how hurtful and disturbing racism is. The footballers being subjected to racist taunts, compared to monkeys , (so animals essentially) are being dehumanized to such a point it is beyond abuse. Just because If the colour If their skin.
If all white people become bored and stop condemning such abhorrent behaviour then we will be truly lost. When we are born we have no concept of our skin colour, children happily play with those of contrasting skin colour and don't even think of it. Hatred and racism is a learned behaviour. So hopefully it is something that can eventually be eradicated.

Syl, this is a horrible disgusting act by these three individuals and I hope they spend many years locked up not seeing sunlight.
But your opening statement suggests that ALL asylum seeking men are rapists (hence your use of the words "reverted to type")
This simply isn't fair OR accurate. Not ALL middle eastern men are rapists. Or do you mean just the ones seeking asylum? Think of the considerable amount of male refugees arriving in small boats every day. Very few have committed rape.
It is a sickening act they have committed and of course it must have been a horrible ordeal for the victim. But not all Muslim men are rapists or animals. Some are decent family men. I dislike their religion because it promotes repression of women but it just isn't fair to label ALL Muslim men (or asylum seekers, I cannot be sure) as rapists.
It does seem.like this thread only accepts news detailing crimes committed by immigrants when it used to be so much more.

I don't share your optimism, it seems to be a behaviour ingrained in the human psyche. By viewing another person or group of people as inferior, it gives one a sense of superiority. It's a form of projection where one's own deficiencies are seen in someone else.
It's behind much of the animosity we see every day, and more seriously leads to wars, genocide and 'ethnic cleansing' when it manifests at a collective level.
If you're interested in psychology, Carl Jung had a lot to say about it (he referred to it as the Shadow).

Firstly, I have said repeatedly on this forum,( though it's pretty obvious without even saying it once) of course not ALL Muslim men are rapists.
Not ALL men who arrive here in small boats want to harm the people who are giving them refuge....but there are enough who do, and they are the ones who are making the news.
Of course, the ones who are committing these crimes are 'reverting to type'. Do you think they were fine, upstanding men in their own counties? Countries that treat women like dirt incidentally....so apart from what other crimes they are running away from (could be anything, many destroy their papers before they get here) their mindset is that women are not worthy of respect....and that's how they act when they get here.
The title of the thread 'Is Britain broken', can include many different reasons why we think it is. Unfortunately, one of the reasons it is, has all to do with illegal immigrants, which includes the way some act when they are here, and the priority they are given over many law-abiding people who were bred and born here, or arrivals who have contributed to this country for decades.

I find some of the comments in this thread regarding the Palestinians, heartless to be honest.
There's suffering on both sides, and history tells us that time and again the Israeli's tried for peace or some compromise.
Israel withdrew settlers and military forces from the Gaza Strip in 2005 in an effort to adhere to the peace plan put in place by the Quartet, an informal group created to pursue Middle East peace comprising the United States, Russia, the United Nations, and the European Union.
The Israeli military remained in control of Gaza’s borders (except the Gaza-Egypt border, which is controlled by Egypt), airspace, and coastline. After Israel’s withdrawal, Hamas and other smaller militant groups fired rockets from Gaza into southern Israel. What does anyone really expect Israel to do?
There's only one way to overthrow a regime as vile as Hamas. Fight it. Just like everyone had to fight the Nazi's.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict dates back more than a century, with flashpoints building from the United Nations’ 1947 initial UN Partition Plan to the 1973 Yom Kippur War, to the recent Israel-Hamas war sparked in October 2023. Despite continued efforts at brokering peace—including the 1979 Camp David Accords, the Oslo Accords of the 1990s, and the 2020 Abraham Accords—conflict has persisted.
So, it's not so much being heartless as being in possession of the facts. Yes, it's awful all those people have died but you have to focus on why. The real hate lies with the fundamentalist Arabs. I think both Israel and the Palestinians really want peace but the fanatics won't let that happen. They will not ever rest until every single Jew is slaughtered. And that's the reality of it. Even here in the UK we have imams calling for their destruction. Not content with a peace treaty our moronic homegrown flag waving protestors are still screeching for Israel's obliteration like the brainless useful idiots they are.

Woman 'raped on Brighton beach' by three asylum seekers

Hamas wants to destroy Israel.
Israel wants to destroy Hamas..
They are not the same..
68 thousand civilians including 20 thousand children, either killed or starved to death.
"Collateral damage" on a grand scale.
That 68,000 is everyone, including Hamas fighters..
We killed about 100,000 people, in one night of fire bombing Tokyo. Based on today's "standards" we were committed genocide on Japan for their attack on Pearl Harbor..
I doubt the 20 thousand children included Hamas fighters.
Call it what you want....they are still dead.
I doubt it too..
Although I doubt lots of numbers coming out of Gaza..
Who's counting the bodies.
