Yes, people can believe what the state tells them is true ... or not.
Are we supposed to believe the official story about the death of the late home secretary Robin Cooke?

I don't believe for one minute the Scientist who went to Iraq and said there are no wmd, killed himself. He was murdered to shut him up, so Bush n Bliar could invade Iraq!

If they wanted to shut him up, they would have murdered him before he started talking.
Its not like one person was going to stop that invasion anyway. They had 100 for every one of him.

Maybe some people are assassinated to make an example of them.
I should think fear is a very strong reason to persuade others to keep their mouths shut.

Its possible.
But both countries had large numbers of people protesting the war. But that wasn't going to stop the invasion.
The downside of getting caught plotting an assassination (the truth always gets leaked in the end) far outweighed the upside silencing one person..
It's far easier to just ignore them or discredit them.
One of the great things about wiki leaks and other leaks is it showed what we were to behind closed doors, and what we weren't up to..

I don't think the truth always gets leaked. There will be a small group of very elite special agents who are tasked with getting rid of people who could cause problems, divulge secrets, bring down governments, etc etc....they do their job, they are professionals who are well paid for their expertise and their silence.
Think James Bond.

Nah.
You give government too much credit. Its incompetent and the truth eventually comes out.
Now, these operators may remain silent, but the clowns running the show always get leaked for one reason or another.

Maybe they operate in the shadows alongside the government, but without needing their approval....a bit like the big banking corporations do.

There could be some of that too..
But there's always a trail. At least to any sort of complex plan involving moving parts..
It's why we know what happened to Che. What happened in operation Ajax.
The intelligence community keeps things quiet long enough for anyone to care..
Think of during The Troubles. No doubt you're government would have loved to just make half the leaders of the IRA dissappear of they could, as a lesson to the others. They never would have gotten away with it..

I saw a thread on Dogs that said Truthy had died.
If so, it's very sad. I liked him a lot, he loved life and enjoyed it, even though he had some hard times.
RIP Truthy.

Intelligent bloke. I learnt quite a bit from him.
I was listening to a Tom Waits song when I first saw the post about him on dogs and the song just happens to have a line it... soon everyone you knew will be gone.

Didn't Truthy come over from SOL?
I used to discuss current events and such with him on dogs and maybe SOL..
I know there was a lot more going on in the other parts of the forum that I often avoided.
He just up amd disappeared and was gone for years. I'm sure there was some sort of reason but I never really knew..
He seemed like an alright dude even though we often disagreed.

Was looking for somewhere just outside Wrexham on Google maps earlier and I know to an English person there are are some weird place names out here but I accidently seemed to have run into the red light district which sounds very English... Llidiart Fanny Farm!
Imagine having to give that as your address to people!

Took some doing but I discovered that Llidiart Fanny wasn't an STD but a toll gate hundreds of years ago when cowboys or as they were known here drovers had to pay to mover their cattle through... and or sheep pigs geese goats.
These men on horseback would drive huge herds of cattle to Wrexham London even Kent some earning big bucks and always trying to avoid the tolls.
Yes I was intrigued by such a p0lace name... Llidiart means gate but I still don't understand the fanny part.
