People were contaminated before the lockdown. The death rate may have been far greater without a lockdown, we don’t know for sure.

I agree with you on the Italian lockdown. It doesn't seem to have made a lot of difference. We can speculate how much worse it might have been without it but it is just speculation. I'm a fatalist as regards to this, I think the virus will do what it's meant to do despite our efforts. The time when a lockdown would have worked was sometime back in November.

It suggested 500,000 could die if we do nothing, while the government's previous strategy to slow the spread was likely to lead to 250,000 deaths.
Instead, it is hoped the steps which have been taken, which are essentially about suppressing the virus, will limit deaths to 20,000."
So with the lockdown working it is estimated the number of deaths due to coronavirus in the UK will be 20,000. A carry on as usual policy would lead to half a million dead due to this virus. These are estimates and based on a model.

I don't think anyones suggesting a carry on policy. What I'm trying to say is that people manage and asses the risk for themselves. If someone chooses to go for a walk in the park they shouldn't be held accountable or shamed as reckless spreaders of the virus to the vulnerable. The vulnerable should be taking responsibility and precautions as well. You've just as much risk of catching it at the supermarket, more so maybe.
