 It says the elephants are going to the river, not towards it.    Three monkeys are going towards it.   So, we have 9 going to it.  Three going towards it.  Each monkey had a parrot in each hand, that's 6.  So nine are going towards the river.

 Yeah but how did you get five as the answer?

Probably several weeks if they have to order in the materials for 100 dolls.   Unless these are magic elves who can magic up the materials.  However if that were the case they should be able to magic up the dolls in an instant.

 No, cos if it takes 5 elves 5 minutes to make 5 dolls, surely that means that each elf has taken 5 minutes to make a doll?

So, no matter how many elves there are, they must surely only take 5 minutes each to make a doll.

That's assuming that they all work at the same rate of course.
