A case of the more virulent strain has been diagnosed in Gibraltar (about 45 minutes away). This now means my Brit expat friends can still nip across the border to Gib to do a Morrisons supermarket run. But they can’t reenter Spain without a whole load of hassle, reams of paperwork, proof of residency & proof of negative PCR tests.
They’re gonna be buying local for the foreseeable!

Two new strains to watch out for now, the one that has taken hold of large parts of SW England, is presumably the one diagnosed in Gibralter, that's now spreading to many parts of the UK also.
The newer S African strain, hopefully can be controlled better, all flights from S Africa are being cancelled here, anyone who has recently been or been in close contact with someone who has MUST quarantine, and the government here has said tough police powers will be enforced to make sure this happens.
Christmas 2020 is surely going to be remembered....for all the wrong reasons.

No idea, Syl. I try to keep up with what’s going on in the UK, but it feels like I’m living in a completely different COVID ‘bubble’ here.
I do believe it’s unrealistic to expect the new strain to only be present in the UK, though.
Be safe, guys!

I am expecting that too....not that it'll make that much difference to all of us who are following the rules in Tier 4.
I am a bit bewildered by the people who are blaming the government for the rising infection and death rates, yes, they have made mistakes, but the blame also lies at the feet of the millions of people who have refused to follow guidelines,
and that will become clear once the infection/death rate soars again in a couple of weeks after all the fools who had big Christmas gatherings have spread themselves around.

I think full scale lockdown should have been sooner instead of the tier system however with selfish idiots like this around as you say it would not make much difference.

The worst figures ever in the UK today.
Over 62,332 new cases and 1041 deaths.

Posted this elsewhere on here -
Watching the BBC News atm, the medical staff and especially the nurses look absolutely exhausted, their eyes like a soldier who has just been through a horrific battle.
Terrible.
I just hope all the selfish bastards who totally ignored/still ignore the rules are happy with themselves.

Is this because back in March they didn't have the testing up and running or is it just more cases?

A bit of both I expect Digs, but the trouble is cases are still rising exponentially and we are nowhere near the peak of the Second Wave yet, just wait until those who contacted the virus over the Christmas period go into hospital.
I predicted over a 1000 deaths today and I was right.
Sadly things are going to get far worse before they get any better.

Remember at the start of all this and to the horror of everyone a possible 25,000 possible deaths was predicted by some minister?...if only.

I remember an expert saying we could keep it down to 7000 if we were lucky although in a worst case scenario it could be as high as 20,000 at one point!
Meanwhile in America the deaths stand at just under 370,000 - I wonder just how many of those died believing in Trump's bullshit and conspiracy theories about the virus?
Most of the violent mob today were still not wearing masks - what absolute morons!

Very slightly - however the US is so vast and far less densely populated than here so it should be far, far lower.
Mind you what the hell happened in Belgium? :surprise:
Belgium struggled more or less from the start...they are densly populated, but so are other places that have not suffered like they have.
Sweden seemed to fare well at first, they handled the crisis very differently from the rest of Europe, long term it hasn't worked so well.
Does any country have an answer? Other than rolling out vaccination programmes quickly...I doubt they do.

New record for the US yesterday - 4,100 deaths and here today, 1,162 have passed.
I hope to God the vaccines are going to be as effective as they say.

More potentially very bad news....
Two cases of another new strain of Covid-19 linked to South Africa have been identified in the UK, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said.
