Remember at the start of all this and to the horror of everyone a possible 25,000 possible deaths was predicted by some minister?...if only.
I think it was the CSO who made that what some even thought at the time was a very optimistic early guess. Other "experts" were coming out with higher figures at the time.
On death figures. Between some Countries Death per capita figures seem to chop and change over time. For instance a week or two ago both Spain and Italy had a higher death per capita figure than the UK. Now it's just Italy when it comes to Europe.
Germany has had more deaths over the last 4 to 6 weeks than any other Country in Europe. Not many weeks ago they were on 21,000 now they're are at nearly 40,000. The rate of infections and deaths of late have accelerated extremely fast over those weeks compared to any prior time over there.
I remember the CMO I think it was. Saying a long time ago it will be years before we can make fair comparisons regarding all kinds of statistics. In my view this pandemic is a long way from finished still. In terms of how quickly statistics can change in given Countries.

*sorry and Belgium.
As has been mentioned recently on here. The news never talks about them.

Germany's COVID deaths have skyrocketed, they are rapidly catching up with other European nations.
This second wave is totally brutal - I never thought we would lose nearly 1,200 lives a day here.

I think any Country will skyrocket if this new variant gets to them in any reasonable numbers. Germany aren't really saying yet whether they have much of the new variant or not. But it's transmissibility how VERY easily it appears to spread is ridiculous.
I don't think any Country could hold this variant back too much! No matter what techniques they use. No matter how good the tools at their disposal are. And even if the masses follow restrictions and rules very stringently I still don't think you'll slow this variant down in a big way. Some experts have basically said this. They aren't sure you can get R 1 or below.
I think only vaccines in the vast majority of vulnerable and old people's arms will slow hospital admission and deaths right down.

If the vaccine is not as succesful as hoped for, or if new mutations manage to skirt round the effectiveness and become more deadly, I think the strongest will survive and build up immunity, for everyone else it'll be goodnight Vienna.
Part of me has accepted this could be a reality.

Scary. But true.
They say in some cases you can tweak vaccines fast if need be. But not always.
So again. Yep you're essentially spot on.

Indeed and the new South African mutation may not be as vulnerable to the vaccines as the other strains of COVID.
Happy New Year!

Maybe we are being a bit pessimistic, but another thing I have noticed is how many people seem to accept this as being a possible reality.
The human psyche can be very adaptable when need be.

Actually I really think we will be ok.
However the death toll will be tremendous before we are all immune.

I hope we will be OK, but so many people are dying all over the world, and the daily figures are still soaring, it can feel a bit like Armageddon.

Imagine living in the time of The Black Death - which wiped out 30-60% of Europe's population just to start with!
Thank God for medical science, antibiotics and advanced vaccines is all I can say.
However another zoonotic pandemic is almost inevitable within the next couple of decades (and could be far worse than COVID-19) so it pays not to be too complacent.

The numbers have soared again both here (1,325 deaths today) and in the US (4,207 passed yesterday).
This second wave shows no sign of slowing, just the opposite in fact.
I know, but where? Not round here tbh. Edit to say it's the hospitals, they're over run now.

And still it's not enough for the anti vaxxers, and the idiots who think it's just a bad cold.

Yeah and those are the ones who will be happily spreading the virus as they refuse to take the vaccines.
It does my head in.

Having the vaccine does not stop you getting or spreading covid.

Social distancing is the best method to stop the spread.
The vaccine will prevent millions more dying of it or becoming seriously ill and needing hospitalisation, two good reasons to get immunised as soon as possible imo.
