All these wind generators and solar panels and not very much electricity generated the last couple of weeks. Very little sunshine up until today and virtually no wind for a couple of weeks. This is a very intermittent supply. People think generating electricity is the important part but it isn't. Controlling the energy created is the key to it all. Power consumption drops you turn down or off a furnace or two at a coal fired plant... energy demand about to rise fire up more furnaces! You can't do that with sunshine and the breeze. So there's a loss of control over the most important part of power generation. The last couple of weeks wind power has been running at around 3% of what it can produce. The UK can't possibly compete with a coal fired Asia. We need to accept nuclear is the way to go but we don't have the money to build it!
There are some interesting plans afoot for an extra supply of power when demand outstrips generation - there's a massive amount of power held in the nation's EV batteries which can be sold back to the Grid. A typical EV battery holds enough energy to provide the needs of an average home for two days.
Mind you - as someone who constantly bangs on as you do with your anti-renewable energy, anti-EV, climate change denial, pro-fossil fuel etc agenda, I'm sure you won't be impressed. Meanwhile keep burning your coal!
That's from the Boris government and nothing since.
Notice they give four million quid to four people... sounds typical Boris to me but more importantly... how many families will be able to keep their fridge running and their lights on for a day?
More EV's need more electricity but this offers not one lightbulbs worth of extra energy production but an awful lot more consumption of electricity we don't have!

Do these people who want to close down gas and oil production realise that electricity is only 20% of the UK's energy consumption?
We need oil and gas and this stupid government is stopping international investment into over 80% of the UK's energy needs?

Your main concern seems to be what happens if the wind stops or the sun goes in - that's when the Grid's balancing mechanism kicks in, and battery storage is being used increasingly as a way of providing reserve power, although it still has a long way to go.
Batteries have to be charged up... from the grid or with a bit of luck the wind and the sun.
Battery technology is no where near up to the job yet and it cannot power up a steel mill or aluminium or cement plant.

That's right. It's used as a reserve that can kick in fast to balance the Grid if the frequency drops. It is up to the job, because that's its job.

EDF Renewables confirmed to NCE that the solar farm had sustained damage, which was currently being assessed, and that it was currently conducting a clean up.
It further stated repair work and replacement of the damaged panels was expected to last into early 2025, meaning electricity being generated at the farm was halted until at least then.
An EDF Renewables UK spokesperson said: “Unfortunately our Porth Wen Solar Farm has sustained damage during Storm Darragh.
“We are currently assessing the extent of the damage and conducting a controlled clean up.

Lots of flooding around Greater Manchester today, 40 plus flood warnings have been issued.
I think it's more due to the fact that the fields have been built on, with lots more housing estates planned where the flood plains are.
No doubt, when the floods increase year-on-year, it'll all be put down to global warming.

The rivers used to be much wider more shallow and flowing a lot slower.
We made the rivers much narrower therefore deeper and faster flowing.
They were narrowed to build bridges town centres industrial and housing estates and we now pay the damaging price.
