That's not a bad analogy..

One thing that is certain is he's speaking out of both sides of his mouth. He's stating the tariffs will stop giving some countries the economic advantage of lower wages and make production here more viable. That's the position of many of our trade unions.
In theory that could work.
But, he's also claiming that if these countries open up to free trade, he will drop the tariffs. Of course that would mean building things there would be cheaper than here again.
So if he is wanting actual free trade, he's using the unions and the like to get it, while they won't reap the rewards of protectionism.
Free trade and protectionism can't exist at the same time.

The White House is telling Wall Street and the nation to trust Trump. How often does a charlatan say 'trust me'?

There's one glaring problem with his numbers. They're fake. He's used a formula for each country based on the US trade deficit with that country as a percentage of that country's exports to the US. Nothing to do with the actual tariff that country puts on imports from the US. So in the case of the EU for example, his numbers come to 39% which he claims to be the tariff, whereas the actual average EU tariff on US goods is around 5%. It's all smoke and mirrors.

So Trump the con artist has done it again. The numbers he claims to be tariffs imposed on the US are fake. They are nothing to do with actual tariffs, just numbers he's come up with using a bogus formula. You couldn't make it up, as the saying goes. He has though.

Trump put up tariffs in his first term. Biden didn't change them but then went on to double them. And nobody batted an eyelid.

Yes, let's deflect this current disaster onto Biden. Are you thinking of China?

In politics its a decline with ethical standards, integrity, acting with impartiality for the good of all and generally acting with virtue. I guess these are old fashioned concept but they are valuable none the less.
So in practice moving away from a small elite prioritising their personal gain over the good of the people, requiring loyalty over competence, being nepotistic, manipulating the country for partisan gain rather than the whole of society and so on.
Some politicians are awful people. When that person becomes head of the country then their actions are dictated by their character which in turn is detrimental to country as a whole.

In a way you have to admire Trump's chutzpah.
Apparently he is the saviour of the working class and is going to lead to their renaissance by re-industrialising the US through tariff protection. Sounds great except JP Morgan indicates the tariffs are the equivalent of the largest tax rises in about 60 years. On top of this it is likely to be inflationary meaning increased costs for already struggling households. This is at the same time as budget proposals extending the TCJA which disproportionately favours the rich and increases the national debt by trillions of $ which is apparently an existential threat to US stability.
I've said it before and I will say it again. This is a heist leading to rich getting ever richer and ordinary people being priced out of being able to live even a comfortable life (we have the same trajectory in the UK.) If Trump is intent on reshoring it will take a long time for the benefits to kick in, if they ever do, for ordinary people. I think 5-10 years is realistic. Doesn't sound great to be struggling for so long to get to some promised land.
Good luck to us all.

Guest is right though in my opinion.
Trump's 1st term tariffs were targeted. These are not and are highly likely to lead to reduced living standards in the US and globally while they play out. It's economic warfare.
Tariffs aren't all bad, particularly to protect nascent industries but this approach? It's bonkers.

No Maddog it's not a secret arrangement, the richest most powerful people are now very open about their intent. There are more billionaires than ever before in recorded history yet the UK at least is sinking under debt and those in charge have decided the elderly and disabled should foot the bill. In America the unelected Elon musk is sacking people as he pleases, he does so as the richest man on Earth worth 16 trillion. The President is the 7th richest man on Earth. Together they could help those in poverty more than could be imagined but no, that's no fun. The reality is the President is creating needless tariffs that will make countries a lot poorer , including his own. It makes no sense at all and is like watching a car crash. But to naively declare the rich don't want to maintain a staggering divide between rich and poor when the rich are in charge and they continue to make those in poverty poorer still is just silly.
