Barry was a nice poster....nothing wrong in wanting people to post nicely, it's obviously never going to happen, but I admire the optimism.
He was always trying so hard to organise a nice fluffy forum but couldn't quite stop bitching himself.
Nice fluffy forums are OK for a little while, but tbh who would want to stay on one where everyone agrees with everyone else?
Everyone knows that threads that are less than 'nice' generally have the most replies and views, it's been the same on every forum I have ever been on.
They definitely get the most traffic.

Hi there Diggs,
Yes controversial threads cause an increase in traffic but such threads are usually at someone's expense. That's the absolute crux of it. It's cynical to develop a mindset where your only method of getting a buzz of excitement is to upset people. The short term gain is not worth the enmity such threads cause and I don't see how accumulating enemies can be a good thing. And irony of ironies, it's thin-skinned oversensitive types who are often the worst culprits. Onlookers who are not affected by the nasty threads may think "oh it's no skin off my nose I don't care, at least we have an exciting thread now, yippee"... but it ultimately taints us all.
As for the issue of fluffy forums being "boring" depends how you look at it. If you are the one running the forum and there are very disruptive people you do welcome a few so called fluffy spells where everyone just gets on with each other. If you are not admin, it might not affect you much, if you are, you're often caught up in the middle. Tricky!!
We once had a guy who was so combative he'd row with his own shadow!! After he was finally asked to leave, the forum had a fluffy spell that was nothing short of bliss. We did not all suddenly start agreeing with each other after that, but at least we all got on quite well and welcomed the row-free periods. I'm not saying it was 100% the guy's fault btw, but the point is he did not fit in, he was too unpleasant. If you don't fit in, go quietly. And stay gone, simple!

Tricky indeed. most admins and mods have head aches regarding forums. Goes with the territory, I suppose.

The set of letters at the bottom of my last reply was the captcha code mistakenly typed in the wrong box.
I like your hair in your avvy, Digger. Informal and relaxed. On holiday?

Hallo canary nice to meet you
I totally agree with your post about forums. I'm a mod/admin on one and we had a poster just the way you describe, except he can be a great posters and made interesting threads.
Actually, we have a lot of pain-in-the-arses on Newsfix - and as we speak, I have upset a rather large personality on there..... Ooops.
She seems to think I can't have a strong opnion because I'm an admin - I'm a poster, first and foremost.
The site owner takes no notice of her reports (how odd to recieve reports about yourself hahahahaha) and agrees I'm a poster first.

It irritates me a bit the way some people on forums presume they should have more clout than anyone else.
Quite a few people (especially females ime) have strong personalities, which is great...it's when they start vying to be Queen Bee problems start.
I have also noticed quite a lot of jealousy between some women on forums.....far more than is noticeable in RL.....it's odd.

I cant think of any reason other than a minority of people hate the thought of others actually being happy in life, they will try to demean you (usually team handed)......all the while drumming it home how perfect their own lives are.
I have seen it happen on a couple of forums, it's not nice and I know of a few people who left forums for good when it happened to them.

I never think of people as being jealous? I don't think I brag about how wonderful my life is..?

I don't think people do have totally wonderful lives. Mine's been shit at times. But I've not had a boring one.

No you don't, and I have never seen that sort of jealousy on Newsfix anyway.......just on a couple of forums I used to post on.
When I have seen it it always reminded me of the school bully, one ring leader who would gather a little clique around her and go to work.

Same here, but without the downs we wouldn't appreciate the ups.
People who brag about how fabulous their lives, husbands, families always are are liars....bit like couples who say they have never had a cross word in 60 years, they probably never speak to each other.

The most bitter and nasty ones are the ones who are lonely, or have really shit lives, I think. Like Edna and that awful Claire woman. She's one person on forums I really can't stand in any form or fashion.

Also, though, you do find that the ones you don't like or clash with initially, end up being the ones you actually like and respect, and that the clash in the first place was more a similar character.

I don't think I have ever REALLY disliked more than a handful of people in almost 9 years. Claire was vile, Dean obviously, that arsehole Goldmember, cant think of anyone else offhand. There are a few others I wouldn't give the time of day to, but most people I either like or am happy to ignore.
You and me didn't like each other much once Happy to say I changed my mind.
edit to say...off to bed, sleep well Eddie and Digger. x
