I said I know what suits me, I don't particularly like doing 50 situps, or 50 tricep extensions every morning, but they suit my capabilities and keep me 'toned'.

Not ‘toned’, Syl (& Anon) ‘toned’ is not quantifiable.
Dawg says ‘jacked’ instead, so I guess ‘jacked’ must be quantifiable
I make allowances for Maddog speak, after all, he IS American.
😂
I‘m going to stop engaging in this thread for a while. As much as I enjoy throwing some good-natured shade at Dawg, I do believe everything he advises is genuinely coming from a good place.
He’s determined to keep all of us alive for as long as possible, clearly 😂
Yep, he is, but I like the banter, presumably he does too....even though he does take it all a lot more seriously than I do.
As for what Fluffy said, (the mingers comment) a bit harsh I thought, and if people object they are right to comment. As a mod though, I tend not to pull people up on their choice of words, it's an adult forum, and some words are used that are not always kind....that's life. One mans minger may be another mans goddess.
Good luck tonight ladies. x
Oh I didn't expect anyone to pull him up in a moderation capacity just a humanist one like with him complaining how dwarfs walk..(!) Obviously I'm more "woke" than I thought!
On the established forums he couldn't talk that way but I respect that he can here. It may just be a generational attitude some older men harbour.
It's not so much him calling the players "mingers" but the mentality that when he sit's down to watch the match the female footballers are diminished in his eyes because they aren't worth "ogling". It doesn't matter how well they do in the match, they are still not good enough. He even stuck together photos of them sweaty and mid game to show how unbecoming they are. They are not models, but footballers!
Women don't sit down to watch a tennis match and if the blokes aren't handsome say " right, I'm not happy, because he's not fit enough".!!
It just seems to me women are innately more mature in the way they think about things whilst some men, by no means all ,retreat to adolescent attitudes and behaviours. However he is easy to ignore (although I did wonder where the ignore function has gone) and that is what I shall endeavour to do. Thanks for replying Syl x

Sorry, but you were correct until you made this about men talking about a females appearance.
Women are their own worst enemies by judging other women and not supporting female athletes and athletics..
Yes - any idea what happened to the ignore button? is it just Fluffy that can’t use it or the whole board?
Confused much.

I think the majority of women hate to be 'ogled' Fluffy....If I was told I wasn't worth ogling, I would have praised the Lord.
Maybe it is a generational thing, but tbh, I think many younger men, thanks to the internet and the easy access to porn from an early age, have just as warped a view about women as the older generation.
We dont have an ignore button here...tbh, I can't remember if we ever did.

There's nowt wrong with a bit of old-fashioned ogling! It's just appreciating the appearance of someone who is pleasing to the eye. Women do it as much as men, as illustrated in this thread with pics of perceived sporting 'hunks'. It's perfectly normal and not to be confused with things like being a peeping tom or anything seedy!

To me toned is having a reasonable amount of muscle mass and reasonably low body fat (gymnasts, swimmers etc.) Jacked is having high levels of muscle mass and low body fat, although low body fat is not an absolute requirement (sprinters, power lifters, competitive body builders.)
It's incredibly difficult for a woman to become jacked (without chemical enhancement.) That is because women are genetically pre-disposed to carrying higher levels of body fat and their hormonal profile is less suited to building muscle.
It's not as difficult, but still a challenge, for women to become toned (so to look like a fitness / bikini model) for the same reasons unless they are a genetic outlier. Neither of these looks happen by accident and require discipline and sacrifice when it comes to dialling in diet and training.
Maddog is right that one of the best thing that anyone can do as they age is to engage in resistance training (I prefer that term to weight training / lifting heavy as people can be turned off by that usage as it conjures up images of gym bros and broscience.) However resistance is a relative term and depends on the individual's previous training. What is important is for the resistance encountered in any given session to be sufficient to trigger metabolic stress (overloading the muscle) so that when the body recovers it builds up muscle / strength in anticipation that the same level of stress will be encountered in the future. To keep building strength you need to be upping the stress over time (progressive overload.) If you are happy with your strength levels you keep that level of stress (resistance) the same.
If someone is new to resistance training even a high rep / low weight routine can trigger strength adaptations. Certain rep ranges favour certain adaptations (power/strength/size) but generally you get a bit of everything when you expose your body to a level of stress it is not used to previously. However, as you get more experienced these "newbie" results fade which is why people switch to a higher weight / lower rep routine. It is more targeted and efficient.
I will continue to use resistance training into old age as if I have a fall I am less likely to break a hip for example, which can cause significant difficulties in older age.
Here ends the science lesson. I'm here all week. Try the veal.

ogle
"stare at in a lecherous manner:
eg...."he was ogling her breasts"
Ogling is disrespectful. It's not to be compared with a peeping Tom, who sneaks around furtively, but it's designed to make a woman feel as if she is being seen as a sex object (best) piece of meat (worst)
Ding Dong Leslie, in that clip, was simply smitten, he didn't do any ogling, more love at first sight.

You just stated what about 12 other experts I posted said.👍
It really is simple. Your muscles adapt, and you need to keep changing it up to keep them stressed or "guessing"..
It's why crossfitters (albeit too extreme for me anymore) are in such good shape..They never so the same work twice in a year..
I don't do crossfit anymore, but I change my workout every time..Some days are low rep - high weight, sometimes the inverse.
And there is easily 5-7 different exercises that hit the same basic muscle. I rotate between 3 every workout and only work half my muscles on any workout.

I'm wondering which parts of the sporting hunks those who posted their pics were ogling - face, chest, arms, bum, whatever - ogling is a 2 way street and not limited to men ogling women!
Of course Leslie was ogling Miss Allcock - she crossed his path whilst wearing a tight sweater - that was part of why he was smitten!
It's just part of the sexual attraction process - take that away and we all end up being slaves to #metoo, and eventually the human race will die out, due to the opposite sexes being too afraid to look at, and approach those they are attracted to.

I think it is in the fitness industry's benefit to make this appear way more complicated than it actually is so they can sell stuff. As you say it is a simple process which you repeat over time until you get the level of strength you want.
As to why resistance training is beneficial for a functional and healthy life in older age that is pretty simple as well. Let's look at what a few common movements replicate. Deadlift - lifting heavy shopping bags off the floor. Squat - getting up and down from a chair. Overhead press - reaching for something heavy from a high shelf. Resiatnce training is an insurance policy so that you can have a good level of function for activities of daily life as you age.
Are there other ways to achieve a similar result? Of course. Are they as efficient? Probably not.

Women can ogle too, but it's more a man thing.
Men and women will always look at each other and decide who they find attractive, it's human nature, and no 'Me too' movement will ever stop that. But even the most attractive man ogling, staring or letching at a woman's breasts is suddenly a lot less appealing....and I doubt many women would disagree.

She's absolutely right that you cannot spot reduce fat. You lose fat in a genetically predetermined pattern. You may wish it came off your midsection first but it might be the last place it comes off from.
She's right that doing a million crunches a day won't get you visible abs because if your body fat percentage is too high you just won't see them.
Her solution is also a good one. A moderate calorie deficit over time, good level of protein (most people could do with getting more) and strength training. However, there is only one part of that solution which is essential - the calorie deficit.
It could be aggressive, you may get less protein and do another form of training other than weights and still reach visible abs. Might not be as optimal for the goal though but ultimately a suboptimal plan done consistently is better than an optimal plan done rarely.
Not saying I am against women hitting the weights - quite the opposite in fact. However, I think some women may find this kind of messaging a turn off and switch off from it.
