But how many steps do you really need to reap the health benefits? And what exactly does walking do for your body?
New research indicates the magic number is about 7,000 daily steps. Reaching that mark is linked to a significantly lower risk of health issues as wide-ranging as dementia, heart disease, depression, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.
That impact ranged from a 6 per cent reduction in cancer risk to a 38 per cent decline for dementia, according to the study, which was published in The Lancet Public Health journal on Thursday.
On a side note, breaking it up into a bunch of walks throughout the day is better than sitting all day and getting one long walk..

I have been doing about 4000 the last couple of weeks, but that's only counting going on walks. I imagine I am doing 2 or 3 more thousand just pottering, doing housework, gardening etc. I don't have a step counter, so I am guessing.

I'm glad you are near to reaching your fitness goals as I know how important your health is to you.
I enjoy this thread in general. and find some of the videos helpful. I plan to buy an exercise bike as I don't get out as much as I would like to and wanted to know if you thought running outside was the preferable option.
Can you please do me the courtesy of explaining your cryptic comments about my avi? I know Mags has a winged horse avi sometimes, were you implying that I am similar to Mags?? I think Mags is lovely but we have very different political opinions as she would readily agree.
I may be totally wrong in my assumption. Can you please just explain directly what you mean MD? Have I done something to offend?? I honestly have no idea what you meant.

Fluffy, Maddog attributed a comment Mags had made to you. I pointed out you hadn't said it, he apologised to you.
That's all that was.

I should probably start wearing readers/glasses..
I'm not a huge fan of running..If you enjoy it, some running is good for you, especially your heart and lungs..
But it's also hard on your knees.
I cycle a few times a week, but you'll never catch me inside doing that. I like to explore and see things and sitting on a stationary bike for an hour would make me go crazy. The gym is for inside exercise and that's where you should be 3-4 times a week..

The reading is
You'll be doing squats in no time. 😉
I talked to a cute Latina at the gym yesterday. She was hopping around on crutches still working her upper body. I thought maybe she had knee surgery. Seems she just tore her meniscus or something like that..

I do squats now, 5 sets of 10 throughout the day, holding the position for 5 seconds, they are part of my recovery programme.
I don't hold weights like the lady on the vid you posted who had also had a knee replacement. The squats hurt enough without the weights.

Yes apologies to you both. I saw you talking about flying horses and thought "I've missed something here"..
I thought you would prefer running in the outside but an exercise bike would be ideal for my partner too. I am slim but want to maintain my weight. My partner is 6 ft 2 and about 18 stone. He coughs alot for no reason. Since he dislocated his shoulder he hasn't been on his bike and might have gained half a stone more.
He isn't worried about his health but I am.
I know he's tall and I love his tummy actually but not if it will put his health in danger..I just think an exercise bike here would be better until he returns to work. Would weight training help him turn fat into muscle or does he just have to lose weight full stop?

I'm up for that but don't know to squat (in the exercising sense!!) I'm thin but totally unhealthy. She does a video I note. Thankyou, this is something easy to try. EDIT ITS NOT EASY IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE IT BEFORE
But I will persevere.

Pretend you're taking a shit in a hole.
The only other thing would be to push through your heels when you stand back up. It really won't matter with your body weight, but it will when you start squatting 200 lbs. 😉

Muscle burns calories even at rest.
And it prevents injury.

Rucking sort of combines cardiovascular exercise with strength training, especially if you do it in a hilly area..
New research indicates the magic number is about 7,000 daily steps. Reaching that mark is linked to a significantly lower risk of health issues as wide-ranging as dementia, heart disease, depression, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.

I spent about 30 minutes trying to resize a pic in the past.
I don't even remember how I did it.
I'll probably just avoid pics..
You upload the photo, then double click on the image a few times until it turns blue and has resize points at each corner.
