I've been watching my Gone With The Wind DVD.
What a marvelous film and I never get tired of watching it.
I was looking up some of the biographies of those who appeared in it.
Ona Munson (Belle Watling) was one of them.
Ona was married twice.
First in 1926 and then again in 1950 and both marriages were considered 'Lavender Marriages'
I hadn't heard that expression before.
Apparently back in those days being gay wasn't good for a stars career so they would marry another star who was gay and keep up the pretense of being straight.
Another fact about Gone with the wind.....which is quite ironic given that it's been pulled because of it's racist tone.
"Hattie McDaniel was an American actress, singer-songwriter, and comedian. She is best known for her role as "Mammy” in Gone with the Wind, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first African American to win an Oscar.

Gone With The Wind has sold out on various sites since it was pulled a few days ago Syl.
Hattie McDaniel was great in that part, her and Vivien Leigh were perfect together.

And at the Oscar ceremony she was placed at the back of the room on a segregated table.

Yes she was, Segregation was rife in America at that time..
She was also criticised from the Black community for making a fortune playing black subservient women, she herself said it didn't bother her, she would rather be paid a lot for pretending to be a servant than be paid a little for actually being one.
History always has two sides.
This is her gracefully accepting her Oscar in 1940.

I wonder what Dame Oliva de Havilland thinks of the films removal?
She is still going strong and is 104 in a couple of weeks. :)

No doubt Dame Olivia de Haviland faced many prejudices of her own in Hollywood at that time.
I bet the likes of Harvey Weinstein were 10 a penny back then.
