It's still 27 here, at 11pm. It's like being in Ibiza.

All windows open and indoor thermometer displaying 27.6…I’d rather that than shivering under duvet though.

Our homes aren’t built for temps like these plus I don’t know anyone who has AC as it’s not much of a thing here particularly as we might only experience heat like this for a very short period of time.

True....it'd be wasted on us.
I never use AC in the car either, I open the top, and when we are abroad I don't use it in the rooms...I open doors and windows and get a natural flow of air. The sound of AC drives me mad...and it makes the room too cold.
My pet hate is eating in a restaurant with AC on, sitting there with a bloody coat or cardigan on because it's freezing.

You would use it here. Texas isn't Spain..
Years ago I would still come across homes without AC. I haven't seen one in 20 years without it.
Hard to believe people lived here without it..

Curious Vam, what are your temps like atm and do you ever find it too hot?

Surely a practical solution to humid/muggy British summers would be a portable AC unit? Can you buy those in the UK?

I'm sure they can. We have them here to "help" older buildings and systems try to keep up when we hit triple digits..

I'm sure portable ones are available. Lot's of people I know just have fans and wheel them out on the odd hot day.

People lived without all the mod cons 20 years ago....20 years before then they had a lot less. Odd how everyone seemed to manage without fainting every 2 minutes.

But fans that are left running for too long just end up re-circulating the same stale air, don’t they? 🤷🏻♀️ I guess they’re fine for a quick cooling fix, though.

They did. But I think one of the big factors that has led to the shift of population to hot states in the US, is AC.
100 year old homes in Texas had sleeping porches because sleeping inside meant lying in a puddle of your own sweat..

Blowing air across a sweaty body cools the skin.
But it doesn't beat AC.
I was out last night and the AC in the bar was on the struggle bus..Finding a fan was a nice respite as sweat ran down my ass..
Needless to say, the ladies were all glowing or glistening as they don't sweat around here..😉
