The tariffs are the US version of Brexit so we will probably see something similar for consumers - the usual social media posts of empty shelves and higher prices etc.
Americans will get by however with less choice and squeezed household budgets. Not a great life but not long lines for soup kitchens either.
This is going to be nothing like Brexit.
By the end of June you'll be seeing a very alarming situation I think... there's just no avoiding what is happening and the one place it leads to.
Trump has smashed the machinery... it's all broken beyond repair.
I know some people are predicting economic collapse but if America got through COVID which was a major and sudden economic shock it should be able to get through Trump's tariffs.
Empty shelves, delays at ports, people really struggling with the cost of living is very likely and a recession in the US this year is also getting more likely. A fall into a Great Depression isn't in my opinion. Not saying it won't be bad, just not that bad.
Trouble is it's not about getting through Trumps tariffs but carrying on in the midst of the international wreckage of Americas reputation.
Carrying on when all the contracts have been signed to move on without America.
The damage is mostly irreparable long term.
Covid was pretty much a level playing field for all concerned playing a waiting game for all to return to some kind of normality.
This time there is no normality for America to return to.
The oil from Canada won't be returning to America and that goes for products the world over.
America are only 10% of world trade.
America need the world not the other way round.
-- Edited by jackb on Tuesday 29th of April 2025 01:58:52 PM
Does the rest of the world have enough money to replace all of those American consumers?
Trade is a two way street. There isn't some sort of alternative universe where there is demand elsewhere for the same level of supply. Who is going to buy all of that Chinese shit?
As for Canadian oil, we're an oil exporter. And we have the refineries to refine heavy Canadian crude. Do you think they are going to ship oil to the UK to refine oil in refineries that don't exist?
These tariffs are dumb, but like everything you discuss you multiply the problems way beyond reality.

The first print of US GDP figures (they may be revised in a few weeks) for Q1 showed a slight contraction to -0.3%. Looks like this was mostly caused by US companies importing goods like crazy to beat Trump's tariffs.
Part of this slowdown is a hangover from Biden to be fair but some is attrituble to Trump. Q2 figures should give us a better indication but it seems clear ordinary US families are going to feel the pinch this year. I thought they would at least have a year or so.
And the national debt? Still going up.
Goddam.

The debt is going up exponentially. We have already borrowed 1.4 trillion in the first 6 months compared to 1.8 trillion of all last year. We aren't really spending much more on government services. The increase is due to the cost of paying for existing debt. We're borrowing money to pay our ever increasing debt..🤷

So much of what he does is crazy or stupid, but I can't help but wonder how happy Brits would be to load up "immigrants" and fly them back to their country on their country's dime..

You know, Trump does like to troll people.
It's a bit odd how many on the left love to attack the catholic church are now upset over this.
I think the picture is a bit disrespectful but hilarious at the same time..
I saw a meme showing orange smoke coming out of the Vatican. I thought that was funny too..

It beggars belief that no main party has shown any common sense re illegals and asylum seekers, and we are in the mess that we are currently are.
Reform are a breath of fresh air though, and are taking action to prevent migrants being housed in the areas that they now control since Thursday.
They are also publishing a Trump-like plan in the coming weeks to explain how they will deport everyone who is here illegally during their first term in office, which can't come soon enough.

I've always said why not tents? They won't rush here if they get no hotel, no money and no privileges. It has to stop. Our own homeless are in the streets while they have hotels, food and.money, it's a disgrace!
That's why Labour will lose any council or general election. Reform will hopefully act where they won't.

He's not long attended Pope Francis funeral and he posts tacky unthinking pics like that? I'm glad he amuses you both sometimes but he is meant to be the President of America not a comic. He certainly isn't making those poor suckers who voted for him laugh, there are endless reports on how people just about live from pay cheque to pay cheque. It's so unjust the way taxpayers are paying for the tiresome tariffs and prices of home ownership or simply renting is just a pipe dream for young couples both working decent full time jobs. As a ratheq disgruntled young man explained by the time he has paid for rent, bills and minimal food nothing is left over. Trump could change all this in a heartbeat but he couldn't care less. He and his billionaire buddies are getting richer annually. Those offputing updates from him and his grovelling administration telling porkies about the healthy economy are just boring at this stage as everyone knows he's lying.

Whilst I agree with your points re no hotel etc who the hell wants tent cities outside their homes, blighting our countrysides or being set up on the local High Street? Look at the state of Paris for example to see the disgusting mess these tent people have created, or parts of US where they’re peeing and defecating on the streets. Parts of the UK look like 3rd world shit holes as it is.
I could weep buckets at how this country is deteriorating and I truly fear we are past the point of no return as no bugger has had the balls to stop the madness.

Tents are not the answer.
Hundreds of migrant tents were set up in the city centre outside the town hall, bringing mess, human waste, attracting rats and God knows what.
When they are moved on, they just pitch up en masse in another part of the city.

Thats them pitching up wherever they want to. I've seen those tented areas and they are a disgrace.
The illegals coming here (the clue's in the name) shouldn't be given any home comforts at all. I would be in favour of fenced in tented villages far away from the public, like deserted industrial estates, where they can't cause any anti-social behaviour.
Basic rations, and no freebies beyond that.
If they don't like it, then don't come here.
Fuck all this hotel and renting out free homes nonsense
