One of them was six. Who the fuck lets a six year old out without an adult?
He could have been with older siblings, in any case, it's something the families will never get over.
We had some grand adventures out in the woods at that age with slightly older kids.
We might have been more "savy" than kids today though.
Water attracts kids, more usually the tragedies happen in the heat of the summer here, to hear of kids drowning after falling through ice is unusual.
Sadly, you cant watch youngsters 24/7, by the time my own son was 10 and 11, he was playing out for hours having adventures, some of his mates had younger siblings that would tag along.

I wasn't allowed to play out of my family's sight until I was around 10 or 11. I could play on the street outside our house but that was as far as I could go. I didn't let my daughter wander off below that age either, and specially not on main roads and where there was any danger like water. We saw a small kid out on a bike the other day, on the main road and he was only around 7 or 8. It was dark too. Even my husband said, who let's their little kid out on a main road alone like that?

I hate seeing young kids out on the roads on bikes without an adult.
We never allowed it, son rode his bike unsupervised only on the play streets and fields, it was so different in the 70's and 80's.
There were always lots of kids playing out back then, now, they are all stuck indoors, so when they do go out, I don't think, as Maddog said, they are as savvy as kids of previous generations.

I think hell has a problem with temperature extremes in a different direction.
Now imagine us hot weathered Texans trying to do minus 20 C for about 4 days. Everything broke.

Speaking of kids and adventures, this clip (albeit pretty fake) reminds me of me, back in the day. When I walked out of the door in the morning, there was no telling what sort of dangerous shit we would get into ..

That's very extreme...I didn't think it got so low in Texas.
Last week I was in 28c temps...today minus 4.
Next Monday it's predicted to get warmer, thank God...12c is forecast.

We got it all. Right now in Amarillo it's 2c. In Brownsville it's 25c.
Where I live, anything below minus 5c is unusual and causes problems if it stays there for a few days.

Same here really...temps are not usually this low, and certainly not for as long as they have been.

No fridges to turn off,or central heating, just dressing for bed and heated bricks in the bed.

The hard winter has come at last.
Terrible tragedy.
My heart goes out to all involved.

The ages of the boys were 6, 8 and 11. Eleven is way too young to be responsible. What a nightmare.

I wonder if anyone still uses electric blankets?
