It's horribly cold no matter how you put it. What happens to your garden plants when it gets so cold? Anything less than -5 here and my palms and olive tree suffer....I try to cover them or put them away before it drops that low,
If it isn't in a pot that can be taken inside, and it's not acclimated, it usually dies.Â
Same here. I just wondered whether the plants readily available to you were hardier than what we have.
Palms may survive if they are very well established here, other than that, they die, as I know to my cost.Â
If it's native to the region it should be fine. A lot of folks are moving towards that type of landscape. Not for the cold usually, but for the heat..
Â
It's not unusual to see banana trees around someone's pool. But they require far more water than what will come from rain and every 5 years, there is a freeze that kills them. At least in N Texas.Â
Â
Â
Brownsville Texas won't even freeze during this event and will be in the 50s F today while we won't get above 20F.
Â
They grow grapefruit down there and have a climate like Florida. Â

Wow...I would love a tropical garden, sadly it's not possible. If my olive and palms survive, I will be happy....they are in the rear of the garage where they do get some light, at the moment.
Cold, heavy winds and lots of rain coming tonight.

It was really windy last night. We have two heavy pots either side of the front door with conifers in...one of them was halfway down the drive this morning, they have never blown away before even in predicted storms.

Your weather is crazy, at least we are consistent. I don't think it's risen above 10c since Christmas, next weekend a lot of snow is predicted.
I can actually sense spring is round the corner though, the nights are getting much lighter, we don't get dark now till around 5pm...an hour later than 4 weeks ago.
