In these ‘will-he-won’t-he?’ cliffhanger days of trump’s Reality TV show presidency, what do folks think about the possibility of trump finally deciding to weigh in and help his buddy, Bibi, win his war with Iran?
I, of course, could write a whole blog post about what I think. But I’ll just say this…
- A woefully stupid, capricious, malignant narcissist - with zero awareness of the relevant history within the region - makes him the worst POTUS imaginable at the worst possible time.
- A clueless, day drinking, swaggering high T, former Fox News weekend host, who’s clearly completely out of his depth, in charge at the Pentagon and the world’s largest military.
If trump goes ahead, what could possibly go wrong…? 🤦🏻♀️
Great post Vam! It's so bloody scary now 😲

It really is, Mags. Not least because of all the knock-on effects it could have on the rest of the world, if America gets involved.
Maddog will correct me if I’m wrong. But my understanding is that no president can unilaterally decide to go to war, without the approval of Congress.
A glimmer of hope right now is that many of his most submissive kiss-arses in Congress, who usually indulge his every whim, are strenuously against America getting involved in Netanyahu’s fight. Largely because that would inevitably lead to Iran counter-attacking American military bases throughout the region.

You are not wrong, the stakes are incredibly high.
If this becomes another Iraq it will be a disaster, especially financially. I guess money shouldn't matter but we will all feel the pain even if we aren't directly drawn into the war.

American involvement would add trillions to the deficit. Not that trump GAF about that - he added 8trillion in his first term. He feels that’s a problem for future generations to solve.
His usual governing-by-tweet posts recently don’t inspire much confidence in what he’ll ultimately decide to do… (note the word ‘We’…)
’We now have complete and total control over Iran’s skies’
‘We know exactly where the so-called ‘Supreme Leader’ is hiding, He is an easy target, but is safe there – We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now.’
’UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!’

The president has been given great latitude in using force.
The last congressional declaration of war was 1942..
The last congressional authorization of force was 2002..
We have bombed a shit ton of countries since 2002 without authorization.

Good job this was not the halloo when the Germans were trying to take over the world. Perhaps Ukraine should have been abandoned too, and their people wiped out by Putin? Any war involving Islamists is everybody's war. Because they won't stop at Israel.
And mark my words. There will be sleeper cells all over Europe and within the UK, just waiting for the call to Jihad.

Nothing like WW2 this was happening on our doorstep in Europe, same as Ukraine. Would have invaded us. This is the middle east, not our fight.
Iranian cells are here already, many more arriving in boats. Stammer welcomes them!

Exactly.
Both Nazi Germany and Russia had expansionist ambitions and invaded / annexed sovereign territories to do so. Who exactly has Iran invaded?
The Israeli justification is that this was a pre-emptive attack as Iran is very close to achieving weapons grade uranium enrichment. This is despite Iran being subject to nuclear inspections and being willing to enter into co-operation agreements (and given Trump's seeming desire to destroy any legacy of Obama he refused to adopt.)
I could possibly get behind military involvement if there is evidence to conclusively show that Iran is close to achieving a nuclear weapon. Where is that evidence?
This sounds like the old regime change rubbish all over again like Iraq. We were all minutes away from destruction so inspections were disregarded, there were definitely WMDs, Bush and Blair were guided by God in some weird holy war.
If the US want to squander their blood and treasure to achieve regime change that is their business. We should have no part in it. If we do then we will have to accept the financial and social costs, including the inevitable asylum / refugee applications.

The IAEA report looks at Iran’s progress towards building a bomb, its level of cooperation with UN inspectors and its stockpiles of enriched uranium.
On the first point, the IAEA has since 2019 been examining Iranian human-made uranium particles at three undeclared locations in Iran: Varamin, Marivan and Turquz Abad. This was part of an Iranian nuclear programme codenamed Amad, which has been known about for years and is believed to have ended in 2003.
The report concluded that “these three locations, and other possible related locations, were part of an undeclared structured nuclear programme carried out by Iran until the early 2000s and that some activities used undeclared nuclear material”.
The IAEA director, Rafael Grossi, told the board: “Unfortunately, Iran has repeatedly either not answered, or not provided technically credible answers to, the agency’s questions. It has also sought to sanitise the locations, which has impeded agency verification activities.”
The IAEA concluded that after successful implosion tests, Iran had intended to proceed with cold tests – conducted with a fully assembled bomb with a core of natural or depleted uranium rather than one of weapons-grade uranium – and had been conducting blast shielding tests in preparation.
Together these conclusions appear to confirm the breadth of Iran’s previously disclosed nuclear programme, suggesting also that this knowledge will not have been lost in the Iranian scientific community.
enriched uranium is in the finished core of each nuclear weapon.
The IAEA report concluded that it had “no credible indications of an ongoing, undeclared structured nuclear programme” and noted that senior Iranian officials had said that the use of nuclear weapons was incompatible with Islamic law.
But it also pointed to statements from former Iranian officials who suggested that Tehran now had all the capabilities to manufacture nuclear weapons.
“While safeguarded enrichment activities are not forbidden in and of themselves, the fact that Iran is the only non-nuclear-weapon state in the world that is producing and accumulating uranium enriched to 60% remains a matter of serious concern,” it said.
Asked in April when Iran might be capable of weaponising its missile warheads, Grossi said: “Dates are always arbitrary. But they are not far. It would be, you know, a matter of months, not years.”
Nothing like WW2 this was happening on our doorstep in Europe, same as Ukraine. Would have invaded us. This is the middle east, not our fight.

October 7th atrocities funded by Iran. Tens of thousands of missiles have been launched from Gaza and Lebanon on Israel since 2001. All funded by Iran.
The legal age of marriage for girls in Iran is 13, and fathers can obtain judicial permission to subject their daughters to forced marriage at a younger age. Iran publicly hangs homosexuals from cranes. Human rights defenders. Sharifeh Mohammadi sentenced to death in February 2025 for simply speaking out.
From April onwards, the authorities implemented the Noor Plan to intensify their crackdown on women and girls who defied compulsory veiling, this includes digital surveillance such as facial recognition technology, further violating women’s social, economic, cultural, civil and political rights and restricting their freedom of movement. Women not veiled are not allowed to drive or get an education.
Iran forbids any other religion being practised other than Islam.
LGBTI people suffer systemic discrimination and violence. Consensual same-sex sexual relations remained criminalized with punishments ranging from flogging to the death penalty.
Adultery remains punishable by stoning to death.
Then there's the systemic impunity for officials involved in unlawful killings, torture, enforced disappearance and other crimes under international law and grave human rights violations.
And you don't think a regime as vile as this won't strive to create a weapon that could wipe us all out?

Sure, it is conceivable that they are well on the way to building a nuclear weapon, and the Islamic Republic is undoubtedly a despotic regime with terrible human rights protections. I don't think that's enough to justify us entering into a war. Saudi Arabia and Qatar are similar in nature and engage in state sponsored terrorism. Should we get into a war with them as well as we don't like their regimes?
10, maybe even 5 years ago, I would have agreed with you. Not now though. Trying to assist in being the world's policeman has to end. Where has it got us? Like the US we are hurtling towards bankruptcy and we are rapidly running out of road. Callous as it sounds we cannot look after anyone else if we cannot look after ourselves. We cannot be sucked into a lengthy and costly conflict.
It seems Israel calculated they would obtain a swift and decisive victory against Iran. That's what I personally thought would happen. If they have misjudged the situation that is for them to deal with. If the US want to assist them that is a question for them. We do not need to be involved. Let them slug it out between themselves.
