I dove a little deeper into that article. That's sort of a survey ranking.
When you test our kids we are a little above average in reading and below average in math.
The testing is what should matter..
Well that's not very good English is it!
It's maths not math.
Unless you go to the bar and say can I have two beer?
Is it reading or readings? 😉
I've often wondered why Americans pronounce things so differently. Tomaayto instead of tomato. Vayse for vase. As for math, as that's short for mathematics and not mathematic, then maths is correct.

Why do Americans say we dove, we say we dived. Why are things said so different.

Regarding education statistics, I think it depends on where you look.

Because the vast majority of immigrants here came from non English speaking countries. As they learned the language they improved on it. 😉

Do you say I'm studying mathematic?
Do you say I'm studying arithmetics? 😉
No because arithmetic is just one single branch of mathematics.

mathematics summary
Among the principal branches of mathematics are algebra, analysis, arithmetic, combinatorics, Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries, game theory, number theory, numerical analysis, optimization, probability, set theory, statistics, topology, and trigonometry. www.britannica.com/summary/mathematics
Webster has a lot to answer for but he was simplifying the language because there was a lot of uneducated peasantry from all over the UK and Europe and beyond who needed everything simplifying to help make things work.

We say we drove too, not always drived.
As in, we drove to the shop. Not we drived to the shop.

I'll start saying maths when y'all start saying sports..
He'll never live this down.
That'll be his legacy

Brilliant!
Mads the other Americanism that I hear often is... I could care less... and I think well go on then!
Correctly it should be I couldn't care less but I'm really not the person who should be trying to teach anyone English!!
What an idiot that man is. He referred to Sunak as the PM last week when he was replying to him in PM's questions.
The man's becoming a comedian!
