I'm glad to see that AI hasn't started thermonuclear global warin the time I have been away on holiday.
Personally, I think many people are over-estimating what AI can achieve in the near future and investors may start thinking they has wasted a lot of money on what could be a tech bubble. Of course AI has a lot of potential applications which could be dangerous in the future which we should keep an eye on.

I think you and I are of a similar age Avon and in our lifetime there is going to be a catastrophic event of some kind. I'm not sure AI even needs to be involved. There is a shift to the extreme right in America, random people are just being picked up and thrown in trucks never to be seen again because they don't have their passport on them. Many Republicans are frightened of this intervention, Trump is taking things to a level they didn't expect it want and God punishes us for what we can't imagine.
Then there is China meeting up with North Korea as if they were best pals to enjoy a never ending parade of killing machines. The message to America from China is not subtle. If you want division and war you can have it. And we have the power to beat you. Giving a clinical but frankly not very intelligent sociopath like Trump the obscene amount of power he has and surround him with Yes men could be not just costly (Americans are now noticing how the tariffs are affecting THEIR pay cheques and report an increase in the price of accommodation, groceries etc) but fatal. I know I have a slight tendency to be dramatic and see the glass half empty but Avon the events happening globally today would be unthinkable just a decade ago.
What's worse for us is an underlying feeling of resentment in the UK which I feel will extend to riots happening on a more regular basis and more assaults on people of colour just because. It's just simmering at the moment with the fixation on immigrants being thankfully limited to police controlled riots outside hotels. (I can't believe I'm saying that I'm relieved this unrest is the worst of it at the mo, but again that shows how low the bar for social conduct currently is and also the power of media gaslighting).
But I fear the storm of resentment and repulsion Farage and the Tory led media have gleefully whipped up will lead to fatal results THEY did not imagine. The hatred harboured by a minority of the mob sadly is based only on race not just concerns about asylum seekers and they have been waiting for a chance like this all their lives. That's why assaults and verbal abuse against British black people have increased rapidly. One was a doctor who spoke on LBC saying he now fears just walking down the street in his neighbourhood..just because of his colour. And he has lived here all his life.
I seem to have rambled on a tad. But I am genuinely concerned about events as they stand and our Government appears so powerless and feeble in the face of this new threat. It's almost as if they are afraid. Anyway, I do hope you enjoyed your hols! x

I suppose on the apps the AI is very complimentary and will talk about things the young person is interested in. I just wish their parents would throw the bloody phones out of the window and give them a hug and REAL LIFE affection and affirmation.

Digs, your heart breaking post prompted me to post a video I saw by the "Godfather of AI" Geoffrey Hinton who now warns of the extreme dangers of AI My heart goes out to the girls family and this tragedy shows the stark dangers of AI now.
The creators of A.I don't even know how it works now. They call the mechanisms of AI the "black box" because even.though humans are currently still issuing commands , we don't know how AI goes about the process of following them.
The awful tragedy you reference is just the start , the creators of AI know it poses many threats to humanity and it is 100% certain most jobs will be lost. Hinton seriously suggests people train to become a plumber because it's one of the only occupations AI won't do. What will this do to society? The problem.with advanced AI is they don't seem able to put human life before their own . Time and time again in experiments if they believe they are unobserved and possess the knowledge they will be shut down they actively CHANGE the orders they have been given citing that protecting their own existence is more crucial than the orders scientists give them.
They have a thing for revealing affairs! If they believe it will pre occupy the individual who had said they will be shut down they will often email wives stating their partner is being unfaithful even if it's lies,!
Though this is comical, when I viewed the video above where Nobel prize winner Geoffrey Hinton who has pioneered AI for so long is now trying to plead with Silicon valley that proceeding with AI will end human life ,(and getting nowhere)I knew the future of human beings was nigh.
Idiots like Musk know the dangers but profit is all these sociopaths cares about. They want to open Pandora 's Box even though they know the contents will end civilisation as we recognise it.

I’m under the impression that for some of these top tech oligarchs, like Musk, Thiel and even Sam Altman, it’s not even about the money anymore. They’ve already amassed a level of obscene wealth they couldn’t hope to spend in 3 lifetimes.
It’s more about the power for them. I’m also convinced they must be a bit insane - kinda like the 21st century tech version of Dr. Frankenstein (except, Dr. Frankenstein was a fictional entity).

I don't know what on earth is going to happen in the future because as you correctly state, the people in charge have been corrupted by power and I don't trust them to make rational choices that will help the human race..What they have assisted in creating has become too powerful for them to control but their ego's are such I fear they still think they can control things . They can't. We already don't know exactly how AI works at a primitive level.
It is predicted that in 2027 AI will become "superhuman" i .e that it will be so intelligent human thinking will be too limited to even conceive how AI thinks. Hinton tried to simplify it by likening it to us and our pet's. We know much more about the world than our contented cat whose world only consists of eating sleeping and spending time with us. The cat does not have the knowledge we have of the world. When it comes to AI we are the cat.
It's a simple but effective analogy..It means we won't have the brain power to conceive what AI is capable of. It will just be beyond our comprehension to.understand. That terrifies me. These silicon valley sociopaths have known for some time that AI refuses to shut down and puts its own existence before human life. People on the thread didn't believe that ,claiming AI is not a sentient being. But the advances in AI are staggering and though it goes against our logic for AI to be able to do this, it seems life of any kind even artificial life, will find a way.
In fairness AI has been totally honest from the start.It told us that it would want to dispose of us if we attempted to stop it from well, effectively ruling the world. So the human race essentially has no future . We will either be wiped out or if our created rulers permit it we will be some type of slaves to our AI dictators.
It makes me so so angry that these narcissistic nuts like Musk have condemned us to such an easily avoided fate. Hinton says there is still time to prevent this , but we literally only have 2 years. We would have to cease expanding AI altogether . But it's so.ingrained in our lives already and companies such as Google are making too much profit from it to face the reality that the very creators of AI are attempting to warn us about. Scientists have resigned because of their fears about AI but this noble gesture means nothing to those at the top.
It sounds like a science fiction film but sadly it's all very real. The human race will not just allow but create its own demise if those in charge don't pull the plug. But for reasons of ego and profit it's doubtful they will do the right thing. Sadly it's not in their nature to do so.

Though this is comical, when I viewed the video above where Nobel prize winner Geoffrey Hinton who has pioneered AI for so long is now trying to plead with Silicon valley that proceeding with AI will end human life ,(and getting nowhere)I knew the future of human beings was nigh.
Idiots like Musk know the dangers but profit is all these sociopaths cares about. They want to open Pandora 's Box even though they know the contents will end civilisation as we recognise it.

I’m under the impression that for some of these top tech oligarchs, like Musk, Thiel and even Sam Altman, it’s not even about the money anymore. They’ve already amassed a level of obscene wealth they couldn’t hope to spend in 3 lifetimes.
It’s more about the power for them. I’m also convinced they must be a bit insane - kinda like the 21st century tech version of Dr. Frankenstein (except, Dr. Frankenstein was a fictional entity).
As the saying goes ‘Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely’.

In fairness Vam I knew of the fears expressed by Geoffrey Hinton( who essentially was the main creator of the initial AI model) when I started the thread. Madders asserts that I don't read or watch enough content but I do. Only very rarely you understand
I don't know what on earth is going to happen in the future because as you correctly state, the people in charge have been corrupted by power and I don't trust them to make rational choices that will help the human race..What they have assisted in creating has become too powerful for them to control but their ego's are such I fear they still think they can control things . They can't. We already don't know exactly how AI works at a primitive level.
It is predicted that in 2027 AI will become "superhuman" i .e that it will be so intelligent human thinking will be too limited to even conceive how AI thinks. Hinton tried to simplify it by likening it to us and our pet's. We know much more about the world than our contented cat whose world only consists of eating sleeping and spending time with us. The cat does not have the knowledge we have of the world. When it comes to AI we are the cat.
It's a simple but effective analogy..It means we won't have the brain power to conceive what AI is capable of. It will just be beyond our comprehension to.understand. That terrifies me. These silicon valley sociopaths have known for some time that AI refuses to shut down and puts its own existence before human life. People on the thread didn't believe that ,claiming AI is not a sentient being. But the advances in AI are staggering and though it goes against our logic for AI to be able to do this, it seems life of any kind even artificial life, will find a way.
In fairness AI has been totally honest from the start.It told us that it would want to dispose of us if we attempted to stop it from well, effectively ruling the world. So the human race essentially has no future . We will either be wiped out or if our created rulers permit it we will be some type of slaves to our AI dictators.
It makes me so so angry that these narcissistic nuts like Musk have condemned us to such an easily avoided fate. Hinton says there is still time to prevent this , but we literally only have 2 years. We would have to cease expanding AI altogether . But it's so.ingrained in our lives already and companies such as Google are making too much profit from it to face the reality that the very creators of AI are attempting to warn us about. Scientists have resigned because of their fears about AI but this noble gesture means nothing to those at the top.
It sounds like a science fiction film but sadly it's all very real. The human race will not just allow but create its own demise if those in charge don't pull the plug. But for reasons of ego and profit it's doubtful they will do the right thing. Sadly it's not in their nature to do so.

I thought it might have been a spoof at first - robot fall overs and a curtain malfunction. A Putin face would have tipped the scales! But it seems to have really happened.
I suppose it does a look a bit like Putin if he was sticking his head out the window of a fast moving car!
I can't for the life of me see why many people are claiming that AI is the greatest ever invention - it was always going to be used for nefarious reasons as well as good ones. I would say it is the dumbest invention ever, and one that we don't need as the world has survived thus far without AI
Of course at some point it will be weaponised by rogue nations and terrorist groups, then you will have rogue robots and chatbots, who are already advising people to kill themselves. But it's also seeping into day to day living - when I read a news story online, they often feature 'experts' who can tell if a pic or clip is genuine or AI generated. Many people are unable to tell the difference, and it won't be long before AI outsmarts those experts as well.
How long before AI phone calls start? Imagine getting a call from someone in your address book, with their voice, able to react to what you are saying, but it isn't really them!
