" Devin Burghart, president and executive director of the Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights and an expert on extremist movements, offered “three possible explanations” for Jubilee’s decision to include far-right voices on the panel.
Burghart said: “Either Jubilee producers were unbelievably negligent in the vetting of debaters, or they chose to stack the room with racists and fascists against a lone person of color in the hopes of capturing a viral moment to increase channel engagement … [or] they were trying to surreptitiously sound an alarm that many young Republicans are being drawn to fascism by having Mehdi systematically expose them during the debate.”
He added: “None of those explanations speaks well of the company or the format, and highlights the peril of sharing a platform with disingenuous far-rightists seeking eyeballs.”"🤷
I don't have a problem with shows that dismantle kooks like this, as long as your honest about them being kooks..
Don't seek out 20 moon landing deniers then project their beliefs to a significant portion of the population..
Some of those kids have been on Jubilee debates before with progressives. I think it is highly likely that the company knew their backgrounds, views and that some of them mixed in the same social circles. I suspect they platformed them because they wanted viral content based on outrage to monetise using fair debate as an easy justification, and they certainly achieved that goal.
I think you are right that we don't want to extrapolate out those views too far into the general population but I don't think we want to underestimate just how popular they are with a section of young people, particularly young men. Just as some young people are highly attracted by far left ideology, the same is true for far right rhetoric. You don't have too look too hard to find young people glorifying fascist or Nazi ideology on social media. Influencers like Nick Fuentes, Andrews Tate, Sneako etc have huge reach and influence. Increasingly these views are not seen as kooky or fringe but are creeping into the mainstream for young people. Hating minorities and liberal women have become fashion statements.
I don't think America will snap back to the centre once Trump is gone. I see it becoming a battleground between increasing far right and far left thinking for a significant length of time.
When you describe a blue jean commercial with an attractive blonde as a promotion of fascist eugenics, you'll find almost everyone is right wing by that metric..
Skinheads, neo nazis and the Klan have been around forever, and they still exist in small numbers..
The media will try to sell clicks by focusing on them far in excess of what their numbers justify..

It's not pearl clutching to have a normal human reaction to human beings suffering, even if they are illegal immigrants. I think a lot of people simply want a fair and humane immigration policy, not wanton cruelty.
There is a way to solve any perceived cruelty - don't illegally enter a country in the first place and subject yourself to it! I wouldn't say it was cruel anyway - the illegals would have been sent back regardless of using the holiday voiceover.
I'm sure they have been fed and waterered in the meantime - they look glum because they have been caught, not because they have been ill-treated.
I think it's just the White House showing they are taking action and getting things done - you can show any amount of figures, but sometimes showing the reality of a situation has a bigger effect than numbers on a screen.
Plus it's a bloody good deterrent!

I've never got the fuss about Sydney Sweeney in the first place so I have no idea what all the fuss is about now with her jeans commercial. Just looks like a standard advert to me.
Sure, there have always been a small amount of people with extreme views but what is concerning is how open these views are on social media, how prevalent amongst young people they are online and how they are bleeding into everyday life.
Some of the stuff on that Jubilee debate was bog standard racism that I remember from the 70s and 80s. Getting a round of applause when you say you are a fascist? I don't remember it being that bad, ever. There are posts on Twitter right now saying how cool Nazi fashion was and how Hitler had the right idea. Maybe we can put some of that down to trolling but it is very noticeable.

I think I worded my last post properly as when I was talking about cruelty I was referring to the White House posting content which seemingly delights in the pain people feel in being deported or mocking that pain. I think if you find yourself being happy by someone's suffering you have lost your way morally.
Of course someone who enters a country should be subject to deportation. I don't have an issue with that. However, let's say you have lived a peaceful life and have contributed meaningfully to that country over a sufficient period of time despite entering illegally there could be some exceptions to allow you to stay. Like most human beings, illegal immigrants span a range from law abiding and assets to outright criminals.
“The Biden administration took office amid heightened debate in some circles over the merits and tactics of deportations, yet it is on track to carry out as many removals and returns as the Trump administration did. The 1.1 million deportations since the beginning of fiscal year (FY) 2021 through February 2024 (the most recent data available) are on pace to match the 1.5 million deportations carried out during the four years President Donald Trump was in office….
In the 12 months after Title 42 ended, the Biden administration ramped up deportations under the standard U.S. immigration framework, Title 8, and removed or returned 775,000 unauthorized migrants—more than in any previous fiscal year since 2010. From May 2023 through March 2024, 316,000 migrants were processed via expedited removal, more than in any prior full fiscal year. And for the first time since FY 2010, in FY 2023 more migrants were returned directly across the border, mostly to Mexico, than were removed from the U.S. interior. Whereas President Barack Obama was labeled by some as the “deporter in chief.”
So, it seems the Biden Administration just got on with the job - without sensationalistic headlines, excessive bragging, blaring videos, a privately contracted militia posing as ‘ICE officials’, or AI-generated images of Joe Biden cosplaying as Arnold Schwarzenegger.
But where’s the fun in that, though?

They are illegals. Found to be in the country when they had no right to be.
Amongst those rounded up are rapists, murderers, thieves, violent illegal gang members, many hiding in the US avoiding the law of their homelands and such like.

That‘s what most rational people want.
But indiscriminate cruelty is often the point with MAGAts. MAGAts demand more drama in their politics, and trump is happy to perform for his base.
I doubt many people would be against prioritising the swift deportation of anyone who enters the US (or the UK) illegally, refuses to assimilate, and then goes on to commit criminal offences.
What I do question though is the lack of headlines and reality TV style videos, featuring the deportations of countless thousands of Russian and Eastern European nationals, who unlawfully entered the US decades agoand have been successfully running vast criminal enterprises ever since.
Instead, the priority seems to be scooping up the undocumented Latino guy picking fruit or trimming lawns to feed his family, or the undocumented Latina care home assistant who cleans up the bodily fluids of incontinent geriatrics.
Easy pickings, I guess …..

"President Donald Trump came into office promising the largest mass deportation in U.S history, targeting the more than 10 million unauthorized migrants living in the United States. Since then, data shows border crossings have plummeted, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests have doubled, and the number of people in detention is at an all-time high."
That's how you tackle illegal immigration, and not by fannying about with 'one in one out' deals or making it illegal to have more than 80 illegal immigrants in a boat!
I’m betting that, ultimately, the cumulative bottom-line deportation enforcement numbers will not end up being vastly higher than Obama and Biden’s.
It‘s just that trump makes a huge big deal about it all, and has turned the whole issue into a reality tv show. Whereas, Democrats have always been crap at messaging.

"GMB halted for record-breaking migrant news as fans forced to switch off Good Morning Britain aired the record-breaking news that more than 25,000 immigrants have crossed the English Channel in a year.
GMB viewers weren't happy about the migrant coverage Good Morning Britain viewers “couldn’t watch” as the programme aired the record-breaking news that more than 25,000 immigrants have crossed the English Channel into the UK so far in 2025. The ITV breakfast show aired the announcement with Adil Ray and Kate Garraway presenting – explaining Britain has seen small boats in numbers rising faster than any year since records began.
The closest came in 2022, when 25,000 arrivals were recorded by August 27th, with a total of 45,774 illegal immigrants recorded by December that year. But in 2025 migrants are arriving even more quickly, risking a higher number by the end of the year.
Viewers were fuming at the news, with one hitting out on social media: “25000 immigrants in boats in a year! Why can’t we close our borders like other countries have done and declare an emergency?!”

Impressive numbers. Like I said I can’t fault him on cleaning up.
And what do we get?…just under 2000 illegals boated in this past week. 2000… That’sStarmer’s idea of “smashing the gangs”.

It’s been reported that 2000 landed here LAST WEEK alone. Where the hell are they going to be put?
Calls an emergency meeting over Palestine, not for the number of illegals arriving, not for the country’s unrest over these illegals, not for the crimes being committed by these illegals or even for the increasing costs these invaders are causing but for Palestine.
If he doesn’t pull his fecking finger out people are going to get seriously hurt. People are understandably angry and he’s waffling about Palestine.
Incidentally, have you seen inside some of these hotels where they’re getting 3-4 meals per day, with 4 poster beds in some rooms…luxuries most working families can only dream of.

The cruelty is reveling in their misery over being deported and using social media content to do so.
There are some violent offenders who have been rounded up and sent back to their country of origin. There are also many people who have lived in the US peacefully, and have no victims at their hands, have friends and family who love them and will miss them dearly in the US, have no real connection with their country of origin and will struggle tremendously. High fiving each other because life has they know it has been ripped away from them because they are in a group labelled illegal immigrants is obviously cruel and callous.
In addition it is clearly a divisive tactic which will polarise an already divided American society even further.

I've always been a bleeding heart liberal my guy.
I take the point however. If we allow exceptions to illegal immigrant it creates perverse incentives. It will make it worth taking the risk of entering the country illegally rather than using legal routes (and demoralise people who decide to play it by the book.)
With regard to the suffering it is more in the scenario I described to the Guest in my previous post. Taking away an established life in one country and making a person move to a country they do not have any real connection with anymore does cause suffering, both to the person concerned and to the people who love them who remain in the country.

I might be warming to him, only a little mind you.
Law abiding should be the default setting for everyone, and shouldn't result in being given a free pass after entering a country illegally. If exceptions are to be made they should be exceptional ones only, and not simply for not breaking the law.
Imo those sent back are not suffering in the true sense of the word, they have been caught out doing something wrong, and are paying the price by being sent back. Of course they don't like it - but I would hardly say it was cruel or they are suffering - they are just getting their comeuppance.
Avon, you are getting soft in your old age!
( “I love the poorly educated!” - Donald Trump )
"President Donald Trump came into office promising the largest mass deportation in U.S history, targeting the more than 10 million unauthorized migrants living in the United States. Since then, data shows border crossings have plummeted, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests have doubled, and the number of people in detention is at an all-time high."
That's how you tackle illegal immigration, and not by fannying about with 'one in one out' deals or making it illegal to have more than 80 illegal immigrants in a boat!
Hats off to Trump on this particular issue.

Meanwhile, under Starmers rule...
"GMB halted for record-breaking migrant news as fans forced to switch off
Good Morning Britain aired the record-breaking news that more than 25,000 immigrants have crossed the English Channel in a year.
GMB viewers weren't happy about the migrant coverage
Good Morning Britain viewers “couldn’t watch” as the programme aired the record-breaking news that more than 25,000 immigrants have crossed the English Channel into the UK so far in 2025.

2000… That’s Starmer’s idea of “smashing the gangs”.
He’s canny enough to use the media to his advantage I feel he has highlighted that not all illegals are there to enrich the American way of life.
Kudos to him being savvy getting the message out...“By any means necessary”
