Shrove is derived from the old middle English word 'Shriven' which referred to going to Confession to confess to the things you had done wrong.
Because Lent always starts on a Wednesday people would go to Confession the day before, a day which became known as 'Shriven Tuesday' which evolved into Shrove Tuesday.
Didn't know that V, interesting.
I was only ever bothered about the pancakes
The first pancake race was in 1445.
Legend has it a woman was making pancakes when she heard the church bells tolling for the start of the service and not wanting to burn her pancake, she ran to the church carrying her frying pan.
Then pancake races started to see who could run the fastest!!

This is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.
I got a bible at Christmas and it has a one year reading plan, which I have been doing since the first of January.
Folk get a cross made from Ash placed on their foreheads today.
"Remember you are dust and dust you shall return"
I'm a Presbyterian, we don't observe Lent.
I think we're one of the few Christian denominations that don't.
Events were held across Scotland yesterday to mark the 100th Anniversary of the Flying Scotsman entering service.
The famous train can travel at 125 miles per hour.
Was a great train for the time, still great today.

125 mph?
When I was wee we used to travel down to England every New Year to visit my dad's youngest brother.
The train journey was a nightmare.
We got stuck at Lockerbie once for two and a half hours in the dark and the heating was on the blink.

Best train ride I have been on, the one from Palma to Soller. The view are spectacular, you can stand on the outside platforms and when it slows down, pick lemons from the overhanging lemon trees in parts. It's a beautiful old fashioned wooden train...makes for a great journey.

Nice photo of the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond
There's been 1144 sightings of our much loved monster Nessie at Loch Ness.
Six sightings last year but no sign of her this year.
Loch is pronounced La:k not Lock
Oh wow, just beautiful. Fancy seeing that at.🌙
I think it was
I missed it Mags, I was too busy watching my lads lose to the Scumbags.
