@ Fluff…your link isn’t working 🤷🏻♀️ But I will go check it out and see if I can get behind that paywall (thanks, Anon! 👍🏻)
On the face of it, and if I had to take a wild guess, I’d say that article is probably rooted in MAGA-inspired propaganda. But I’m not an economist - I’m just deeply biased, in case you hadn’t noticed
Avon or Maddog are probably the most fiscally-minded here, so maybe they’ll weigh in.
Apologies about the link It was a paper in.good standing here in the UK claiming the American economy is in great shape and the "projection" better still. Madders doesn't even agree the American economy is in great shape..

But as for giving Farage "a try" the man honestly wants people to think immigrants eat swans, he wants to take us out of the European Courts of Human Rights. Only 2 other countries not in it, Russia and Belarus. Don't really want to be stuck in a trio with Russia no thankyou.
Won't dwell on that here, the ideas mad. But you're correct about Trump of course he isn't serving the electorate! He doesn't want to, he wants to get rich and ensure who endorse him stay rich . The tariffs are being paid for by the American taxpayer. Do they even know that I'm.not sure they all do.
It's a mess but at least he is isn't trying to.convince Americans to leave the ECHR because they know they need their freedoms and aren't as stupid as us.
Russia got booted out of the ECHR. There was no way they were ever going to conform anyway. There's something odd about Russians. They're what my mum used to call funny fen folk, they do weird things and there's a whiff of Ed Gein about the ones who live in isolated areas. I'll never forget the awful story about that Russian couple who got drunk and threw their 2 year old grandson into the wood burning oven.
But hey, we have Spain and Portugal still slaughtering bulls for the entertainment of the masses. So much for humanity. Something we don't do here, thank God.
Not all member states of the ECHR are bound by all the protocols. States choose whether or not to ratify them. The UK has not ratified Protocol 4. Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Turkey...none of them have ratified all protocols.
In 2008, the ECHR courts held that by permanently keeping fingerprints and DNA data of a person who was not convicted of a crime, the UK police had violated their right to privacy. Yet...here we are now being expected to have all our privacy violated with ID cards, our faces and fingerprints taken at airports, while people are getting locked up for having an opinion.
In spite of the ECHR, the people in this country seem to be losing all their rights little by little. Our freedom is actually being eroded. Because what the ECHR started out as decades ago is changing. It was created with good intentions, but the scope of its jurisdiction made its judgements binding. This has led to a diminishment in sovereignty, as foreign judges have used it to overrule and constrain Parliament. The result has been the illegal migrant crisis, the disaster that is our asylum system, and the persecution of British veterans.
Nobody likes change. It scares people. But sometimes changes have to be made in order to progress. The UK is not progressing. We are devolving into something terrible.
Who knows that our future holds. I do feel it will get worse...much worse, before it gets better. Because we have generations of mindsets that need to be re-booted and de-infantilised.
Digs, as I have said several times now no body is saying that some of the ECHR is not outdated. That is why she has suggested amending it to ensure we can deport immigrants who must leave our shores but also ultimately remain in the ECHR like every other country on Earth. Except Russia and Belarus.
Why hasn't Farage suggested this? Because it suits him just fine to remove all our basic civil liberties if we aren't going to protest. We will be akin to.America only the divide between rich and poor will become so much more vast. No other country has left the ECHR entirely the way we intend to do except the two countries above. That speaks volumes.
I am.furious with Starmer because he has allowed the optics of the party to distract from the reality. If Labour get Burnham on board, stop implementing right wing measures and kick Starmer to the curb along with his I.D cards there will be a chance of retaining our basic liberties.
Reform as a party are just a mess. One was arrested for beating up his girlfriend and Farage wanted to conceal that and lie to the country but no change there. The problem.is many people are voting for Farage not Reform and there is a distinct difference. The rest of the party with an exception of two individuals I have seen are totally unprepared when interviewed. They won't be able to do their jobs adequately. As I said they are just an unprofessional unprepared rabble united by one common interest.
Your comments on change are interesting. It is quite so we are devolving into something terrible but our reasons for thinking so may differ. We embraced change leaving the EU and that has been a disaster. Mags said if she had a second chance she wouldn't vote leave again. Hindsight is a wonderful thing..But this time round we know how dishonest and ruthless Farage is. It was always going to make the country poorer but Farage and Gove insisted that wouldn't last.It has. It is also the main reason we cannot deport immigrants. You know this. Prior to Brexit we could return migrants who had come from France back to France whilst we processed their application. Brexit has stopped us being able to do that so of course the amounts of immigrants have tripled! Due to Brexit we have to house them all.
The immigration crisis is NOT Starmer's fault(,although the right wing media imply it is and the Brexit voters are only too happy to agree as it avoids introspection and considering they may have made an uninformed choice). Fault for the increase in immigrants lies with the Tories for allowing the public to make such a life altering decision without knowing what leaving would truly entail and Johnson's for not making a more beneficial deal. However Brussels were under no real obligation to help us further. .We voted to leave the EU and that's what we got. So embracing change is not always a good thing and just under half the population who did not want to leave the EU did not have an "infantalised" mindset. Far from it, it was they who were more informed.
We have changed so much already as a country Digs and not for the good. Farage said Brexit was the answer to all our immigration problems knowing full well legislation would make it so much harder to deport immigrants, I may be in error but didn't the pound crash when we left the EU? All the resentment and bigotry is destroying our country. Isolating us even further by leaving the ECHR in its entirety will leave us totally at the mercy of a millionaire who has no qualms sending women back to the Taliban to be tortured, or murdered, at cost to the taxpayer.
When he sends back the legal migrants keeping the NHS and care homes together our already vulnerable healthcare system will crumble which is of course intentional. . People will be forced to go private, which the Tories have tried to make possible for decades. If you can't afford to pay, tough. Farage is totally unoriginal and following the Americans playbook. It is chilling to me what like the future holds. Hopefully once Starmer is removed people will realise isolation and an extreme right wing fringe party is not the answer.
You seem hell bent on blaming Farage for everything that's happened over the past 15 years. With no comment on the real culprits.

I could say the same swapping Farage for Starmer.
Who are the real culprits in your view? The Tories demolished the country and that is reality but since you support the right, I doubt you think they are the culprits.
I don't know why I defend Starmer, even my Mum hates him. I think it's because he's like a deer caught in the headlights. Farage is an evil person imo, Starmer is woefully inept but he isn't evil. The Tories didn't want to win the election and deal with the huge mess they left behind.
Starmer has to try and make progress with a ruined economy and somehow stop the boats when he is bound by international law not to. Perhaps we should try and catapult the migrants back, the impatience of the electorate is such.
The way people pick at his every move you would think he has done worse than Liz Truss yet he hasn't. It will take a lot longer than a year to expect real advances in immigration with all the legal blockades in place due to Brexit.

I agree that Starmer isn't a evil man, he is probably very nice, just woefully unsuited to be a leader.
Farage on the other hand strikes me as being ruthless, all for himself, totally untrustworthy, and basking in his new found popularity.
Between the two of them, I see little hope for the country getting back on track anytime soon.

Starmer led the Crown Prosecution Service when the celebrity sex offender escaped justice. To this day he insists he was unaware of the investigation. He's a renowned liar.
He also refused to support a private prosecution against several terror suspects, including Abu Hamza, Babar Ahmad, and Syed Talha Ahsan. That makes him evil.

Donald Trump dramatically announced that he would rule Gaza with Sir Tony Blair if Hamas accept his 20-point peace plan.
The US President declared at a press conference at The White House it was a 'big day, a beautiful day' and 'potentially one of the greatest days ever in civilisation'.
Mr Trump quashed rumours that the former British PM would oversee control of the territory - revealing it would instead be him.
He said a 'board of peace' would be 'headed by a gentleman known as President Donald J Trump of the United States'.
He insisted this was 'not at my request' but said it's 'what I want' as 'it's so important that I'm willing to do it'.
He said the board would have leaders from other countries, including Sir Tony, who he described as 'a very good man'.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer backed President Trump, saying the peace plan was 'profoundly welcome' and called on Hamas to agree to the terms.
'We strongly support his efforts to end the fighting, release the hostages and ensure the provision of urgent humanitarian assistance for the people of Gaza,' the premier said. 'This is our top priority and should happen immediately.'
'We call on all sides to come together and to work with the US Administration to finalise this agreement and bring it into reality. Hamas should now agree to the plan and end the misery, by laying down their arms and releasing all remaining hostages.'
The plan, which the MAGA leader has circulated to Arab leaders, was released after Mr Trump met the Israeli PM in Washington.
The two leaders arrived at the press conference late, after discussing the terms of the deal, which has yet to be finalized with Netanyahu, Arab leaders, and Hamas.
'Let's call it eternal peace in the Middle East,' Trump said triumphantly. 'This is far more than anybody expected, but the level of support that I have had from the nations in the Middle East and neighbors of Israel has been incredible.'
Mr Trump said Netanyahu had given his backing to the peace deal, which calls for an immediate ceasefire, followed by disarmament of Hamas and Israeli withdrawal.
He heaped praise on Netanyahu standing beside him for 'agreeing to the plan' telling him: 'This will be your crowning achievement.'

As I’ve mentioned before in this thread, it looks like potential redevelopment opportunities along Gaza’s coastline are becoming a reality. And as you say, especially now that Blair is sniffing around.
And I’ll end my morning venting with this: On the day when the government will probably shut down, the former Fox News weekend host (a reportedly recovering boozehound), now the ‘Secretary of War’, has summoned all the top military brass serving all over the world to what is being called a ‘pep rally’.
Several millions of dollars being spent to gather elite US Generals and Admirals all in one place, for little more than a vanity project..
I have questions: Has he not heard of Zoom? It’s incredibly cheaper! Also, given a shutdown could result in air traffic controllers being put on unpaid furlough, how the hell will some of them be able to travel back to their posts?
(source: thedailybeast.com)
”It was later revealed that the mysterious meeting essentially amounts to a photo op where the former Fox News host is expected to deliver a speech on “warrior ethos.”
“This is seen as a waste of time, and it offends them at a pretty fundamental level.”
Imagine, top-flight Generals and Admirals - many with decades-long experience, especially in combat - being lectured to by this swaggering little faker. 👇🏻

I do feel that the fundamental principal of a third party, shall we say, running Gaza is the only viable way to promote peace. Because Hamas won't allow it and Israel won't back down. So, what other option is there?

It could have been done cheaper..
But Pete has been in combat. He's not a faker.
While he lacks the experience of generals, the generals with all of the experience allowed the US military to turn into a social experiment. Pete's redirection of the military shouldn't have been necessary, but here we are.

Hamas:
Trump truly is the saviour of mankind sent from God above.
If you think Trump is bad, then with Tony 'Satanic' Blair on board, the old filthy lucre will flow.

😂

” It was later revealed that the mysterious meeting essentially amounts to a photo op where the former Fox News host is expected to deliver a speech on “warrior ethos.”

OMG - your avatar
I read Goodnight Moon to both my kids so many times when they were little. I'm forever scarred now.
It could have been done cheaper..
But Pete has been in combat. He's not a faker.
While he lacks the experience of generals, the generals with all of the experience allowed the US military to turn into a social experiment. Pete's redirection of the military shouldn't have been necessary, but here we are.
