Most odd superstitions have some sort of truth to them, usually pertaining to the time they were thought up.
I read the idea that bad luck would follow if you left new shoes on the table, dated back to when people would go round nicking shoes, the newer the better.
Sometimes things dont change much. More recently, kids have been bullied into parting with new expensive trainers.
