That certainly worked. When we had mice we caught quite a few in a couple of humane mousetraps. We would release them in the trees about a hundred metres away. Thinking back, it could have been the same mice that followed us home.
Apparently, they have an excellent sense of direction and can travel a mile or two back from whence they came.

Mind you...they looked like mice to me, not rats.
My one experience with a rat was...it was a lot bigger than those little creatures.
