I could be wrong, but I wonder if the secret to his longevity is that he's lived most of his adult life in a permanently laid-back serene haze of blunt smoke

He wrote a lot of great music. The folks that run Nashville didn't like the way he sang and preferred that he just write.
He came back home, grew out his hair and the rest is history.
