This is so sad. The man had this squirrel for 7 years, it never went outside, so there was no way it had rabies. The whole family are heart broken. I get that rodents are perhaps more likely to carry diseases but only if they have access to the wild. You can see how healthy this one is and how loved.

Aww, he should have been able to keep it, the squirrel will probably die once it's taken away from the life it has always led.

Cruel bastards.
The squirrel was so happy, it was obvious it was loved and no threat to anyone's health.

I just found this, it's really sad. The couple are obviously heartbroken.
While it was dumb to put down either animal, I'm more concerned that the authorities used tax payer money to conduct a raid on a citizens house, tear it up, make the citizen sit in their bathroom for hours, while they conducted the search.
Game wardens in the US have probably more power than any law enforcement officer, but this is ridiculous..

Amazing that police who have been alerted, do sod all when a shooter is climbing on a roof and gets the chance to shoot the president, yet up to 8 officers can get a search warrant for a tame squirrel and a racoon.

Because it allegedly bit someone, and you have to kill them to test it for rabies..
But if the had left it alone in the first place.................

The mother had been run over and killed, so they took the baby home, then tried to reinstate it into the wild but it wouldn't go. So they had no choice but to keep it.

I meant left alone by the Game Wardens.
I get it, we can't have people just running around adopting wild animals. And, people have anthropomorphised animals to the detriment of wild animals, but what could have happened is they could have helped these rehabbers get the proper documentation and possibly pay a small fine that would go towards wildlife in the state of New York.
The fact that actual people were detained (deprived of their liberty), in their own home is still what really irritates me..
