Syl said something on the other thread about people really being hurt by comments made on forum. Do you get hurt by it to the point of being upset?
I must admit that I’ve always seen it as just silly words on a screen which we can all switch off whenever we want. So never been in tears, never will but maybe others differ?

Not really. Because, though annoying, we all have the choice to log off. I get more upset when it's someone else getting upset.

I doubt I would have been around since 2007 if nasty words written by a stranger on a forum bothered me.
I feel for others though, some people may be lonely and rely on the internet for company, and I have known several people who enjoyed posting, but felt they had to leave because of the way they have been treated online.

Never bothers me. Hate it though when others have been hurt by spite.
Most are sad, trolls, no friends, bullies, not worth a light.

I would imagine many of the keyboard whackos we often see online used to be out and about in public, pestering people and generally making a nuisance of themselves.
Thanks to the internet, at least they’re now much more likely to be sitting in their own homes to rant at people from behind a screen.

True Vam. I also feel most of them act “hard” behind a screen when in actual fact many are 8 stone dripping wet and would piddle their pants if confronted by their targets in real life.

Have you ever been affected by news stories you've read? Did you say to yourself it's nothing, it's just words on a screen?

News stories are different to a scrote sitting behind a screen bullying someone don’t you think…oh hang on, seems you don’t.

Sorry but I’ve not seem many genocides, mass murders or natural disasters happening on forums to date.
Bit different from “you’re an ugly cow.”

Jess Carter is a strong woman who doesn't seem to get upset easily yet she has been forced to leave social media after being the target of relentlessly vicious "words on a screen". There is also going to be police involvement regarding the worsening hate speech online.
It is considered a crime. She has not just received abuse about her race but also her appearance and when someone becomes a target over an extended period of time and the abuse is profound of course this may have an impact on someone's mental health. If Jess Carter ,someone used to being watched and scrutinised in the in the public eye,is unable to cope with the continuing onslaught of abuse that shows how awful these "words on a screen" can actually get.
Anon you make a point of saying how you would never be bothered by such trivialities but have you experienced constant crude dehumanizing abuse on a daily basis for years with a baying mob cackling as an audience as Jess Carter has? We are not privy to just how depraved the abuse she and others receive so maybe it's best not to judge until you have walked in their shoes.
Jess, who has played for England since 2017 and was part of the team that won the Euros in 2022, said the abuse had been ongoing throughout this tournament.
The defender has faced some criticism for her performances, specifically against France and Sweden, and although she said fans can have opinions, she said it is never acceptable to target someone's race or appearance.
"From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse," said Carter. "While I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result, I don't agree, or think, it's OK to target someone's appearance or race.
As a result of this I will be taking a step back from social media and leaving it to a team to deal with."
The English Football Association (FA) has confirmed it is working with the police “to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice".

I think you will find a prolonged campaign of dehumanizing harassment and online abuse against one person goes a bit further than "you're an ugly cow".
Adults and teenagers have killed themselves due to it as Syl mentioned above. The woman who wrote "words on a screen" is now dead because her hate speech was exposed.
There definitely needs to be policing of teenagers receiving an onslaught of online abuse because they never get any respite.
Before social media home was a refuge for victims of toxic bullying. Not so now. Victims are bullied at school, receive dozens of bullying texts at home, have to endure websites dedicated to how worthless they are and how they should just kill themselves. Sadly some teenagers with their whole lives ahead of them have done just that.
But yeah, just words on a screen..

I agree with you 100%.
Being called an ugly cow by a few random strangers is one thing, continued abuse, day in day out, especially for a young, lonely, vulnerable person, can lead that person to upset, depression, and in some cases, suicide.
I have to wonder if the people who can't see that are in the habit of abusing people online themselves, either that, or they lack an empathy gene.

Just as a side note, thanks to comments on here, I actually did watch the football woman's semi-final, I got really into it, and will record the final tonight.
I personally thought all the girls were fit (obviously) but most of them would have been very pretty when they were ready for a night out and not a football match.
I know it's not a beauty contest, but I just thought, as a woman, I would give my view.

Words are powerful, whatever way they're delivered - be it spoken, written on a screen or in a letter. To call them 'just words' trivialises them and the effect they can have.
