I will start off with this, what would you do if...a pigeon was injured in your back garden?
I have one right now, it's a big fat wood pigeon, it's not bleeding, from what I can see, but it can't fly. If I try to get near, it panics and it's hurting itself falling off rocks iand stones trying to keep distance. It's secluded, plenty of places for it to hide if a predator comes along, so I have left some food and water quite close, and I am leaving it for nature to take it's course.
So, what would you do?

Throw a blanket or anything to hand to cover him and pick him. If you can, put him in a box and take him to a vet. You won't have to pay as they will deal with him.

This happened to me earlier this year, not sure if I posted about it. If a cat's got it, bitten it or even licked it then it's dead already. Cat saliva contains a deadly bacteria that kills birds within 24 to 72 hours. You've done what you can.

I'd leave it be.
Circle of life and all of that.
Animals die so other animals can live and in the wild, and its usually not pretty or peaceful.

I have a feeling it's a pigeon that has nested with it's partner in the same tree for several years. Two of them used to sit on the branches in the Christmas tree, and they would build a nest every year.
A couple of months ago we noticed only one of them was there, have no idea what happened to it's mate.
Anyway, we will soon know if it's the remaining bird, because none will be up in the tree from tomorrow.
I couldn't bare seeing it injured, it could have lasted days, so I took Mags advice.
OH covered it with a soft towel, put it in the bowl, where it lay very quietly, drove to the vets, and they will humanely put it to sleep.
I feel really upset though.

It is upsetting. I was heartbroken because I put the wood pigeon in my greenhouse overnight as cat's were loitering and I wanted to keep it safe. It even ate some birdseed. Next day it was a flapping mess and obviously suffering. I put it in a box with a teatowel, went inside to get a drink came out and it had died. It had been attacked by a cat, as you could see puncture marks on it's back where the feathers were missing, and it couldn't fly.
It kept looking around for it's mate, I think it was the female as it was smaller, and the male was flying around.
Then the day after it died, after I got all maudlin about how some birds mate for life etc, there's Mr Widower Wood Pigeon billing and cooing with his new rub. Fickle little fucker!

That reminds me of when my ex husband's pet Budgie got ill. He loved that bird, and took it to the vet. Vet took the budgie tenderly in his hands, then turned his back for an instant. There was this imperceptible jerk of his right elbow and Lo and behold dear old beloved Harry (or whatever the hell it was called) was miraculously deceased. My husband never forgave him.

If there is no hope, anything quick and painless to put any creature out of it's misery is good...and for anyone who can do that without having nightmares afterwards...good luck to them.
I will let you know if we have any pigeon in the tree tomorrow,though I suspect we won't.

2am, sat in the back of boyfriends black cab, eating a box of KFC. It was dark, I felt something odd in my mouth the wrong texture to be chicken, it was a full claw, covered in Colonal Sanders crispy coating.

I would probably have dealt with it how you handled it, Syl. Failing that, I’d have tried to protect it from predators as best I could, and just let nature take its course. No way could I end the poor thing’s life myself!

Bit late in the day now, but I would have gone for the 'let nature take it's course route'. If nothing else, it would have fed a hungry fox, and maybe saved another (healthy) pigeon from providing the fox's dinner.
I saw a dead badger a few days ago - I'd never seen a live one before. It looked chubbier than I imagined badgers to be - almost like a bear cub, but with a stripey face.
