A Catholic priest from Rhode Island could quite possibly be the most deranged man of the cloth I have ever read about.

He comments on Abortion and Child abuse have sparked outrage after he claimed Pedophilia doesn't kill anyone but abortion does.

Surely he should be defrocked or sacked or whatever it is that happens to priests for making these comments.

When is the Catholic church going to get it's act together.

Whatever you're feelings on abortion - and I admit I have mixed feelings on the subject - you can't use it as an argument to excuse oir diminish child abuse for Gods sake.

What are peoples views on Catholicism and what is the cbs news attitude to Catholicism?   A black dies and everyone gets to see it in their own homes which causes mass demonstrations in Britain, France across America.   A person says something crass about paedophilia and everyone gets to see it in  their own homes which causes mass revulsion against Catholicism.

There have been nowhere near enough demonstrations against institutional child abuse in the Catholic Church throughout the world in my opinion.

Any other organisation would have been utterly destroyed by such appalling revelations but it's far too powerful for that to happen.

On a lighter note Viz summed up the situation that made me laugh out loud - satire at it's best.

How many others believe that it is time to utterly destroy the Catholic Church given the paedophilia scandals in the Church?   Does that mean Catholicism itself should be utterly destroyed given that Catholicism cannot survive without the Catholic Church.

I was raised Catholic so knew plenty of catholics, familiar with the church etc.

Gasp shock horror most Catholics are much like anyone else. The institution of the Catholic church however, like all institutions tends to have these pockets of corruption, cover ups and controversies which are far removed from the essential message the church was founded on.

I think the current Pope did make the effort to try and address this but politics and factions within the church moved to block this. I suspect he's been cowed sadly.

While I don't think child abuse is any more particular to the church than it is say to social services, dysfunctional families etc, I do think the church needs to overhaul the system if it's going to survive into the 21st C.

It’s not just Christian religions either but they are an easier target to go for as opposed to say for eg Islam.

I suspect it will be just as bad if not more so in Islamic institutions.

For the record I was Baptised as Catholic and the first three schools I attended were Catholic.

However to say I am lapsed would be the understatement of the decade.

I think the problem there is that Islam tends to be community based and as such those communities tend to want to keep their problems in house so to speak. It's not criticised as such because those issues are mainly kept hidden whereas that might have been the case in say Ireland in the fifties and sixties social influences has led to a more secular outlook, even among religious people. Being less in thrall to religious authority people are more willing to speak out.

It's easy to see why some Catholics might feel under siege and singled out in particular but any institution that affords authorty or respect to a persons title is going to attract certain types with other agendas. That's why rigorous self policing is important. Sadly the church has failed in that. I think because of the over arching reach of the institution. I agree with Pope Francis in that he would like to see the church as a more grass roots, regional, accountable authority rather than a monolithic intitution.

I'm a lapsed Catholic myself but I do understand that a formalised spiritual aspect to a culture can be important/neccessary to many people.

So many institutions are guilty of Shielding paedophilia. Look at the BBC for example, the FA, Scouts, Orphanages, Social Services, Sport in general, it goes on and on. It’s generally a male thing but nannies and nurses, teachers (f) have been found guilty of it. There has been a complete disregard world wide for the plight of children and it’s a bloody good job people feel they can talk about it.  It’s asking to structural racism, it has been ingrained into our society since forever and I for one am glad these vile people are being outed at long last.

I think in general we're in a more open transparent society these days thankfully.
