Rising cases over 80 campuses soar to 5,000

Bristol University has ordered 300 students to self-isolate in their flats after a flurry of 40 coronavirus cases at one halls of residence.

Everyone living in The Courtrooms accommodation must 'only socialise with those in their living circle from this afternoon'.

Nope...1700 Manchester uni students have been locked down for a couple of weeks now.

There are various reports of students confined to rooms being short of food, to students crowding together in one small dorm and having parties.

When you're young you have lots of energy and want to live life to full.   Most people get that.  But there comes a time when you have to put yourself to one side and think of others.

It takes a hell of a lot for young people to believe they are not immortal. You tend to believe you are invincible.

And the young tend to be selfish on the whole. We all kinda were.

Both of the above things aren't mindsets that create good outcomes when it comes to covid19.

A 19 year old student has been found dead in the halls of residence in Fallowfield, Greater Manchester.
There are no suspicious circumstances, but no other info is available.

How incredibly sad. I bet his mum and dad waved him off a couple of weeks ago to start his new life, it's very upsetting.

This is about as surprising as the sun rising and setting every day.

I have no sympathy at all they should have thought of their sick, elderly and vulnerable relatives.

Following a few rules is hardly the same as going over the fucking top into No Man's Land or fighting the Nazi War Machine is it? bored

That sounds like a suicide or an overdose.

I don't know how the British press handles these stories. In the US, this is how suicides or overdoses are handled.

Usually info comes out about how the person has died.

All this case says is there are no suspicious circumstances and the lad didn't die of coronavirus.

I can understand why any family would want to keep a loved ones death a private matter, but that doesn't usually stop press intrusion and reporting.

I suspect it was suicide as well - sometimes no one knows what inner turmoil someone is going through - especially if the person is very good at putting on a happy 'mask'.

We have no idea about this case, but in general males are far more likely to commit suicide in the UK than females are.
75% of suicides are male.

"Despite having a low number of deaths overall, rates among the under 25s have generally increased in recent years, particularly 10 to 24-year-old females where the rate has increased significantly since 2012 to its highest level with 3.3 deaths per 100,000 females in 2018."

It's unthinkable to think 10 year olds can be so depressed as to kill themselves.

I suppose a few people get so exhausted by putting on a front that they end it.

Males often don't talk about their problems, so like you say they cover them up so they never get resolved. Suicide is either a call for help or making the final decision that life just isn't worth living, if only some people talked more instead of bottling things up I'm sure suicide rates could be cut, especially in men.
Obviously depression plays a part in suicides, odd that life is relatively easy compared to what it was a couple of generations ago, yet depression seems more widespread nowadays.

But a 10 year old shouldn't have suicidal thoughts, they should be playing out and mixing with their friends without a care in the world.

I think that being able to talk about problems helps women immensely.  I know I've survived a lot by being helped by female friends, who I love dearly.   One of my best friends has left the UK to return to Dominica for good.  I cried buckets the other day, even though I know I can still facetime her and speak on the phone.  She's been my mate for 35 years.   But life goes on and she was born over there and her mum lives there and is elderly.   At least we now have somewhere to stay for free if we choose to visit.   :sunny:emrm:cheer2:

I've long considered volunteering for the Samaritans.   I will one day.  They helped me once when I was very low.   It would be good to give something back.
