Innocent blokes in the wee hours get attacked all the time as well due to macho bullshit and gang mentality.

I should know and have the scars to prove it 'did you spill my pint or are you looking at my bird?' etc.

It was a terrible crime but portraying all men as violent sexual predators is a vast overreaction much like BLM here (the US might be different although burning down your own city hardly helps matters).

Perhaps giving such offenders a longer time in jail would be more of a deterrent?

Our justice system is so heavily weighted against the victims it's ludicrous.

We are talking of the way  women have been programmed to be afraid of being out alone at night for fear of sexual abuse by males.

I doubt many men are afraid of going out at night because they fear sexual female attack.

Oh I agree there Syl - when a girl or woman wants to look good for a night out there is always the nagging fear of some scumbag using it as an excuse to verbally or even physically threaten her if she is walking alone.

But what's to be done?

The vast majority of people are decent but a significant minority (both male and female) are not.

I don't see how anything other than education can help.

In these days of Tinder, Grinder and endless extreme porn on tap respect is a hard thing to teach I think.

 Most men wouldn't dream of shouting sexual remarks, groping, stalking or sexually abusing a lone woman in the street, yet most women have had to suffer one or more of the aforementioned in their lives.

 I was saying this to my OH, the other night as we were watching the news.   Every single woman on the planet has, at some time in her life, faced sexual predations from men.    Even the most well intentioned ones such as whistling and winking.   

Now, I'm not a misandrist, but as I pointed out, all that is well and good if the woman is ok with it.  If she says, 'enough' or 'no'  or indicates a man should back off, then that's her right and every man should respect that.

I've been in situations where a bloke has approached me to chat and not wanting to be rude, I've been pleasant and chatty back.  But then they get all arsey when you switch your interest to another man, or you want to chat to your girlfriends and not them, as though them making those overtures is some kind of possessional thing that gives them the right to 'own' your full attention, body and soul.  A woman has a right not to fancy you, or even to change her mind about fancying you if that's her wish.

The problem with a lot of these predatory men is that every thought and action is led by their dick.  When you combine dick with ego you've got a man who won't take no for an answer.  

A male is hardwired to sexual predation. That's part and parcel of the reproductive instincts.  Without that persistence, none of us would exist.   Most men keep that under control... most normal men.  But because it's an inherent sexual drive, I doubt very much it'll ever truly go away, it just gets buried by societal restrictions and the level of intelligence and compassion of the male.   I reckon if you took all that away, then a lot of men are fully capable of running sexually riot given half the chance.

 I don't think it will ever change.  If it could be changed, it would  been done by now.   I do think we need more police on the streets...not just driving around but actually patrolling around in twos.   They took that off the streets back in the late 1980s, I think.  My husband was a policeman when they used to walk the streets.   At that time they were alone.   

I remember he told me that one night, around 3am in the morning, he was patrolling up and down the deserted High Street, you could have heard a pin drop, he said.  A serene, silent lovely peaceful time of the day.  Those were the days when full uniform was that ghastly tit helmet.   As he strolled along, he got a terrible attack of wind.  As was his propensity, he stopped, lifted a knee to waist height then forced out an almighty prolonged fart that sounded like a firework.   It reverberated off the buildings and echoed satisfactorily into infinity up the street.  Just as he was lowering his leg, some bloke, who must have been coming up behind, overtook him and scurried past.    I laughed til I cried when he told me that.   

Now, these days that would have been YouTube gold!
