Almost every cell in the human body contains a couple of meters of DNA.

We have near forty trillion cells making... nearly 50 billion miles of DNA in each one of us!

I can't get my head around that at all!

50 billion miles is 16 return trips from earth to Pluto and Pluto is that far away it has taken the Voyager probes near on forty years to get there at around 10 thousand miles an hour!

Another way of looking at this 50 billion miles is it is enough to encircle the solar system.

So as you try to get to sleep tonight think on that fifty billion miles of code inside of you!!!

Good excuse for my expanding waistline perhaps...

To me it's like how can we have 5 miles of something inside of us let alone a hundred miles or ten thousand... maybe a million but fifty billion miles! My head just cannot deal with that at all!

This one I've struggled with since being a kid but I'm sure you smart people will scoff...
We're on the earth which physically could be described as being like a football.
Up here on the top half we're going about our business the right way up but... the people on the bottom half are going about their business also the right way up!
How can that be?
I was told stop thinking up and down because there is no up and down in space... errr yeah ok.
Think of a plane landing in England and a plane landing in Australia they are both the right way up... errr yeah... that didn't help at all!
I still can't get my head around it!

This one is unfathomable to the greatest minds in history!
Scholars of all persuasions are still struggling with it and have been for thousands of years.
Consciousness!
I use the term big bang loosely as it is out of scientific fashion just now but it's the best I have.
Nothing nowhere without time to be doing it goes bang and everything is created!
All these atoms hurtling along some form planets gasses rocks metals liquids and so on.
But somehow some mix together and start thinking... looking... listening... wondering... measuring... communicating... these odd atoms have formed self replicating systems that build a fucking big telescope and look back and declare... wow look at that we're part of a huge explosion!
The big bang has started thinking!
The universe now has consciousness!
There is no science for that and the topic is still hotly debated by theologians and philosophers of every shade imaginable.
How the fuck did that happen?

I don't think the Big Bang happened.  It's all speculation.   It's only a recent thing that they've discovered the truth behind dark matter.   There's more the Universe than we know yet.

My favourite unfathomable is the most complex structure yet discovered in the known universe and that structure is the human brain.
Each human brain contains more connections than all the phones satellites computers etc in the world which suggests we have lost some abilities to do so much more than we presently do.
Could we once upon a time communicate with each other from afar?
Just one of maybe endless possibilities.
Could we maybe have once been able to self teleport from place to place?
Will we ever discover or rediscover our true potential... I mean look at us!

In the human brain, some 86 billion neurons form 100 trillion connections to each other — numbers that, ironically, are far too large for the human brain to fathom. hms.harvard.edu/news/new-field-neuroscience-aims-map-connections-brain

If you were to take a human brain and toss it in a blender — not that you should — the resulting slurry of cells wouldn’t be special in the way that the human brain is. No thoughts, no worries, no wonder or awe.

That’s because it’s the connections between those cells that make the brain so amazing. By sending electrical signals from nerve cell to nerve cell within a great network of connections, the brain creates thoughts as mundane as “Where are my keys?” or as profound as “I think, therefore I am.”

Making and breaking connections in the brain...

Axons and dendrites can move around, especially when the brain is young. The way in which they connect individual neurons creates the network pathways. During development, the 100 trillion synapses in the human cortex form at a rate of an estimated 10,000 every 15 minutes! Together, all these synapses create a giant network. And that gives us consciousness.
Synapses are very small but incredibly complex molecular machines made up of proteins that guide, maintain and strengthen the connections. One of the biggest advances, over the last 20 years, has been our identification of the tremendous number of proteins that make up these connections. Biochemists estimate there are thousands of different, distinct proteins at each synapse. The amazing diversity of these proteins is what allows the brain to tune the strength and stability of synapses, allowing us to think complex thoughts and build memories.
neuroscience.ucdavis.edu/news/making-and-breaking-connections-brain

Any form of chemical addiction starts shutting down millions of connections each time the chemically dependant brain abuses it's self... sorry lost the link for that one... I'll find it.
But we are truly amazing and like I said earlier the most complex thing yet known.

Our creation of computers has been essential for the advancement in our understanding of our brains.
If you had to sit down and manually count the connections in your brain it would take you three thousand years!

The size of the universe!
People talk about space exploration being exciting but with todays technology it would take around 80,000 years to get to the nearest star from our own... Proxima Centauri.
That's thousands of years with nothing to explore. Thousands of years of nothingness. It simply cannot be done with our current tech. The universe might for all we know be in a snow shaker on Gods mantlepiece but to us it is unimaginably vast.

How about leaving our galaxy The Milky Way and travelling to the next one which is called Andromeda?
In space terms it isn't far away really but at the speed of light which roughly off the top of my head is something like a hundred and eighty thousand miles a second it would still take two and a half million years to get there so unless some seriously sci fi stuff somehow becomes reality interstellar travel is unlikely to ever happen.

 One that gets me.

We see the moon in the day all the time  sometimes its there all day and yet my Australian friends  from various parts of Australia  say they can also see it at the same time as I'm looking at it  how the F does that work.

Because Oz and England are not on opposite sides of the earth.  It can be rising in the UK while setting in Oz.

As I said, sometimes we can see the moon all day and all night as can those the other side of the world.

If you see it at the same time it'll be when it's rising for you and setting for them or vice versa. you won't be able to both see it all day at the same time = that isn't possible so you might have got the details a bit mixed up.

Because there's no single 'up'.  Up means in a direction away from the Earth and so up becomes a relative thing, and the direction it points in depends on where you are.

I know that but that answer is not satisfying in some way.

Wherever we stand on the earth the gravity is pulling us to the inner centre of the planet pulling us toward the core.

That's just the way it is.  We are all pulled to the centre of the earth.

The fact that our reality is an illusion is an unfathomable for me.
Everything from your coffee table to your body to your planet is made of atoms whizzing around at the speed of light.
Nothing is still nothing is solid everything is vibrating but we can't see or touch that reality!
How much energy in our world of energy crisis is involved in holding our reality together.
If someone could flick a switch and turn that energy off everything would cease to exist.
No explosions no collapse just nothingness would prevail.
Apart from one thing... thought.
Thoughts maybe... maybe generated from a collection of atoms...
but our thoughts are not made of anything material... does that place our thoughts our dreams our ideas our fears our personalities outside of the material universe?
Some might call it soul.
Are our souls whilst we live... inhabiting a material reality?
