"Violence against women and girls on British railways has risen by more than 50% over two years, according to official figures.
The number of crimes against women and girls rose from 7,561 in 2021 to 11,357 in 2023, and the number of sexual offences rose 10% from 2,235 to 2,475, according to a survey commissioned by British Transport Police. The survey, first reported in the Times, also found the number of sexual harassment reports doubled to 1,908, over the two-year period."
I seldom travel on public transport.
We have a good tram system in greater Manchester. I have used it three times in the last three years, each time there has been an anti social incident.
I would definitely NOT use the trams alone at night....as someone pointed out to me recently, they are a perverts paradise.
There is no guard, no security, and nothing to aid a lone woman (or man) if a nutter gets on board.
I think buses are safer, insofar there is a driver who can monitor what's going on.
Trains with closed carriages don't offer much security, just as trams don't. Once the doors are closed you are on your own with whoever else is on board.

We have guards on some trains so that makes.us feel safe on long journeys.

Sadly they are trying to do away with them now..
The last train I was on was a steam train in Wales....a far cry from the modern intercity ones.

Well that's all they had when you were born
Yes, but it was preferable to the Penny Farthings of your own youth.
The last time I travelled by tram, an old man, obviously drunk, was standing holding onto the bar, presumably waiting for the next stop to get off.
When the doors opened, he fell, and his head was half in half out of the tram. Had the doors closed his head would have been trapped.
I was near the front, I banged on the petition for the driver to be aware. It took a couple of minutes for her to respond, and when she opened the door that separated her cabin from the passengers, she had no idea what was going on.
Presumably she had no working CCTV in her part of the tram, which is dangerous imo.

Yeah but since you're MUCH older than me, they hadn't invented the penny farthing then.

Tell the truth, they hadn't even invented the wheel when you first made an appearance.

There has been a real push in Greater Manchester over the last few years to get people out of their cars and use public transport....or bikes.
Cycle lanes have popped up everywhere, in the most ridiculous places, cutting 2 lane traffic down to one lane, preventing overtaking, and when they are alongside the bus lanes, traffic piles up behind the buses on both sides of the road.
The clean air zone promise has failed...a 15 minute car journey now takes twice as long, what's the sense in that?

That's the same here. When at lights I've had to put my window up as the fumes from lorries, skip carriers etc are awful. It goes into one lane because of stupid cycle lanes. It causes more pollution, more lung problems than before. Traffic is immense and getting worse.

There is no public transport where I am therefore I'm safe...............but thanks for your concern!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
