I never trusted her, she was always trying to get in on the act when he was doing his charity work...pushy, and obviously dishonest.

Speaking of scammers, apparently they are able to scam users of Paypal too now...I always pay online with that method when I can.
Is nothing safe from cheats and thieves now?

And how come everytime I order something from Amazon, I get an automated phonecall within a couple of days, telling me my Amazon account is in arrears...and it never has been.

 Sounds a bit iffy scratch

It can be quite risky to answer a call from an unknown number - even if you're just hearing an automated message on the other end. Maybe try to ‘silence unknown callers’ on your phone? If the call’s legit they can always leave a message on your voicemail, and you can keep track of your Amazon account anytime, either on the website or on your Amazon App.

Scammers are everywhere, especially at this time of year.

I do answer calls on the landline, mainly because I am terrible at memorising phone numbers so it could be from someone I know well.
If it's in any way dodgy, I just hang up, be it a recorded message or a person on the other end.

Today, this wasn't a scam, but they had a bloody cheek.
Went to a garden centre, it's a chain, but we don't often go to this particular one.

Had a coffee and cake, and yes it was table service, though I had to clean my own table...which is my pet hate.
Ordered two coffees and two cakes, cake was almost stale and very synthetic tasting, bill was £17.60, which I thought was pretty steep.
So I questioned it....they had only added bloody service charge, cheeky buggers, we will give that place a miss in future.

Wasn't Bents was it?   Went there recently and some bit of a kid was making up our sarnies.  I asked him why he was putting 1 cm of filling on a 12 quid butty.  The supervisor then came over and backed me up and told him to put plenty of filling in when people are paying so much.  bored

 No, it was a Newbank.

We usually go to the ones in Bury and Uppermill, both cafes are good, and don't try to rip people off.

If I don't recognise the phone number I leave it for the answering machine to pick up, if it's a bonafide call they'll leave a message. I used to have fun by answering, laying the phone on its side, and carrying on watching tv or whatever...they, scammers / cold callers and the like, eventually gave up talking to themselves. One caller got heated trying to converse with, unbeknown to him, Corrie regulars.

There are a few people on YouTube fighting these, mostly Indian, scammers by wasting their time and in some places getting their offices etc shut down.

I read, a good while back, about voice cloning but I don't know how far that's gone. Take care answering the phone folks.

There are quite a few people who ring me on the landline and they may use their mobiles....I am useless at memorising their numbers, so I answer.

If it's a silent or a dodgy phone call, I hang up, block it, and report it on the 'Who called me UK' website.

I may be wrong, but I don't see any risk in picking up to whoever is calling, I certainly would not give details or press any numbers to anyone I dont trust.

In the past I used to answer and politely tell them I wasn't interested in anything they were trying to sell.  Politeness just got me repeated calls and my patience soon lessened so did theirs, some ended up really abusive so I just don't answer unidentified numbers now. At the end of the day, if I remember, I'll check the number online and if it's reported as a scam then I block it.  I input known numbers as contacts so I know who's calling.

My elderly neighbour was scammed so many times, no amount of encouraging him to stop "confirming" his personal details over the phone stopped it.  After he passed away his daughter said she found mail he'd stashed away and upon checking his bank statements etc discovered he'd been sending money to some sort of scam in Holland which made me realise why he always seemed to worry about paying his bills. The new neighbour was still receiving mail months after he'd died.

Scammers, particularly targeting the elderly, make my blood boil.

@Syl…I was suggesting that it can be risky answering unidentified numbers on a mobile. I’ve read and heard that, even just picking up can be a problem, because it can still give the more sophisticated scammers with serious hacking skills access to the entire contents of a cellphone.

Answering on a landline should be pretty safe of course.

I never answer them.  Also my phone warns of scammers so I'm pretty safe.
