I think of dwarfs as the little gnomes in the garden, or 7 dwarfs.

I hate that name.

Why can't they just be people. Yes they're small people, but people nonetheless.

It's outdated, like when I was a kid they were called midgets fgs.

They actually have no problem being called '"little people" and want to be called that or just "people with dwarfism" . The reason being, like you said Mags, they are just people like everyone else who happen to be shorter. nod

Some will put up with the word dwarf, others loathe it, so it's best not to use it. Midgets is apparently the most offensive term.

You're right, it's an outdated term, bordering on offensive. I would just call the person by their name.

If it' offensive, it has only recently been so.

Obviously, if I knew any especially short person, I would call them by their name if I knew it.

"Such terms as dwarf, little person, LP, and person of short stature are all acceptable, but most people would rather be referred to by their name than by a label."

Everything today has to have a label.  If you're different, quick label them.

Many years ago anyone who had disabilities were called handicapped, spastic, etc.  I hated those words.  I used to call them special.  Now they call them special, people who have special needs, much nicer word.I

Small person is nicer than dwarf to describe someone who is little.  I prefer to call them just people like everybody else.

Yep, labels are put on everyone today, and sometimes the labels are swapped and changed about, what was acceptable once isn't acceptable now....it's sometimes hard to keep up.

I know I have sometimes used an out of vogue term...half-caste being one of them....so I make an effort not to use it, but we have mixed race family, and they are certainly not offended at the term, I know, because I asked them.

The real truth comes from the horses mouth so to speak....who decided the term dwarf was insulting, some lofty 6 footer?

No, the individuals with dwarfism did. In the interview I saw the person said some will tolerate the term, others won't. They prefer to be called "little people" or just "people with dwarfism" .

Also, they have no problems handing out drinks, dancing etc as they make a decent wage from it. But "dw*rf tossing " is off the cards, as they don't like people trying to pick up then up as tipsy men at parties have done..(!)
No body would like someone physically man handling them so why would a shorter person enjoy it?
I think the most logical way to look at is they are people like everyone else, just shorter. So it's hardly political correctness gone mad if some don't want to be called an outdated term like dw*rf. However the term" Midget " is considered the worst insult.

Mocking things they can't help due to their stature like the way they walk is in bad taste in my opinion but I'm aware you didn't do that Syl. Maybe it's a generation thing.

I was being flippant with the dwarf tossing comments...I blame Red for egging me on.lol

I will take on board that some people with dwarfism prefer other terms to be used, I would never knowingly upset someone with a badly chosen or out of date word.

Presumably you are not the height that could be tossed....so you are thinking about tossing?

Many moons ago I worked in a Manchester club where the local theatre cast often visited. When Snow White was on, the seven dwarfs were regulars with their girlfriends/wives. All stunning girls, mostly tall too.

Yes I am tall enough to be a tosser rather than a tossee! I'm thinking what the landing zone should be like though - mud, sand, water, polystyrene balls, trampoline?

There's a dwarf that lives in my neighbourhood and I find him quite annoying, as he always seems to run rather than walk. I don't know if that's standard with dwarfs or just this particular one.

He gets in my peripheral vision with his little legs whirling around like the roadrunner - I find him to be quite distracting!

lolNow I’m picturing a zippy Jack Russell under your feet.

People with dwarfism walk(and run) normally for them and are not easily confused with Jack Russell's.

 Whoosh. lol

I know you would never knowingly upset someone, we may disagree politically at times but it's always been evident you have a sound moral compass nod x

And no, I don't believe you have any real desire to indulge in d*arf tossing !  lol I blame Red also!

An NHS doctor and her husband have been jailed for 10 months each after selling stolen hospital PPE on eBay.”

“Dr Attiya Sheikh, 45, and 48-year-old Omer Sheikh made almost £8,000 from selling the personal protective equipment during the Covid pandemic in 2020.

She was working shifts at Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride when NHS Scotland supplier Fannin spotted their products for sale on the auction website.

The pair admitted selling stolen gloves, face masks and wipes online at a time when the NHS was struggling to get hold of them.

Attiya Sheikh's lawyer, John Scullion KC, said his client bitterly regretted her actions.

He said: "She accepts full responsibility. She acknowledges the significant breach of trust the offence represents." “ https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/ppe-nhs-nhs-scotland-south-lanarkshire-general-medical-council-b2791584.html

Thieving bastards.  When the NHS was scrambling around for protective gear these two were robbing what little the hospital had.

The prisons are full up Mags so people are getting lighter sentences. The country is in a mess.

Recent YouGov polls suggest that only 23% of Britons have a favourable view of Starmer, while 67% view him unfavorably, resulting in a net rating of -44.

Give me Milei.

He is the most unpopular PM with the public, considering he is only a year in, that I can remember.

“Starmer sparked uproar yesterday by claiming there was plenty of spare housing for both illegal migrants and homeless Brits.” https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/35951328/starmer-housing-illegal-migrants-politics-immigration/   Yet couldn’t name where.

He really is a fecking clueless tosspot.

Still not to worry, there a few million OAPs and disabled about that can be booted out of their homes, they’re considered dead wood any way…I better start packing and make way for Mo.

Starmer explains small boat crisis to Trumppublished at 12:59

12:59

A reporter has just asked Trump how he thinks the UK should deal with the small boat crisis in the country.

Starmer takes a moment to explain the situation to Trump, saying that it's about "stopping people coming over the channel who shouldn't be here".

Trump then talks about the US' immigration policy and says no-one has come into the country illegally in the last month.

"If you're stopping immigration and stopping the wrong people, my hats are off to you," Trump says.

Trump says even though he knows "nothing about the boats", he praises Starmer's strong stance against illegal immigration.

”strong stance”? “strong stance”???   Starmer is just short of swimming out to personally greet them.

It's the Tories that put them up in hotels with free wifi first..wink There is something odd about the boats problem. If they weren't wanted here, the previous Government or this one would have got rid by now.

We are not made privy to  half of it. Doubtless lobbyists in Tuffton Street are in the know but they won't let the lowly public in on it.

I thought there would be a mention here or a thread made (it probably has been talked about ) but I can't find itragga Soo..

England have won their second UEFA European Women's Championship trophy in a row.

The Lionesses defeated Spain on penalties after a tense final in Switzerland on Sunday.

It's the first time that any England team have won a major trophy abroad, after Euro 2022 was won at home in England.

For fans, this victory may feel extra special following the Women's World Cup in 2023 when they lost out to Spain in the final.

Needless to say, the atmosphere was electric, as two of the world's most-decorated women's football teams faced each other yet again for an international showdown.

England's manager, Sarina Wiegman, was looking for her third European title.

A goal from Spain's Mariona Caldentey in the first half may have caused more concern for England if they hadn't already proved themselves to be the comeback queens!

They had already snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in their quarter-final match against Sweden, which ended on penalties.

I thoroughly enjoyed  watching their journey especially their epic triumphbooyah although I don't often watch men's football.

There are always naysayers who say Women's football is not a "real" sport but the popularity and ratings are such that many people disagree.

Chloe Kelly , she of the shiny blonde ponytail, was definitely the stand out player and she lost her usually steadfast composure after taking the winning penalty, crying tears of happiness yess

The camaraderie between the girls was lovely to see, they were a real team who all respected each other and you could see how much this achievement meant to them.

I think the amount of money and hype surrounding the male equivalent means teams don't act as such, they are more individual players that happen to be in a team, ego's clash and those really in the spotlight believe their own hype and have problems with form.

The girls just got on with the job. They deserved the win, Spain were strong to start but faded and were very poor at penalties!lol

(sorry if there are posts about the Euro win, I didn't see them)

I watched the semi final and caught the second half of the final, both games came down to penalties.
The English team were brilliant. I am usually disinterested in football, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching these girls.
Congratulations to them.

nod I caught most of it too.

What these women may lack physically, when compared to England’s male football team, they certainly make up for in skill and tangible success. The even better news is that more and more people seem to really be getting into supporting world class women footballers and watching them in action.

Which is why this gaping disparity seems very unfair, imo 👇🏻
