It's said Gene Hackman was in very poor health and also had advanced alzheimers disease.
Maybe he didn't understand she was dead, or was unable to help himself. It's a very sad end for them both.
It is very sad Syl, each had a lonely death. The thought of him wandering around bewildered on his own is heartbreaking. I witnessed my elderly neighbour go through the same disease and it ravaged his remaining time on earth.
His daughter(s) claimed he was in perfect health, either they weren’t as close as they made out or it was down to privacy, who knows.

Maybe he didn't understand she was dead, or was unable to help himself. It's a very sad end for them both.
That was sad to watch.
It sounds like after his wife died, he did manage to drink because he wasn't dehydrated. The Dr said his stomach was empty, but it's unclear how long he went without food.
His wife had contracted a very rare disease caused by rat droppings, and the sheriff said there were signs of rats on the property, but not in the well maintained house.
It's unclear why their family and friends didn't check in with them. I would think if an elderly parent had advanced Alzheimer's and a very dodgy heart, their offspring would want to check regularly. He had three children and grandchildren, but he did give an interview once indicating him and his kids were not that close.

She was seen out shopping the day they believe she died, wearing a mask, so I wonder if she thought she just had a heavy cold/felt flu-ish. She was health conscious going by what I’ve read and dealing with a sick partner on your own you just have to muddle on I’d imagine.
The daughters have implied they were all close and claimed he was in great health for his age…some reports have said they weren’t in contact for months, that would include Xmas? Who knows what the dynamics were, many families have fallouts etc and I’m a firm believer that just because you’re family doesn’t mean you have to like them. Perhaps his wife didn’t reveal his health problems because they didn’t get on, maybe she/they didn’t want them around - a million reasons why. It’s the lack of friends being in contact that puzzles me more so.
Her death is sad, no age to die but his death really saddens me due to his Alzheimers and no one knowing he was on his own.

I'm surprised they didn't have a home health worker if he was in that bad of a state.

Near the end she was obviously his carer, and by all accounts she did a good job.
It's just so sad that when she suddenly died, he was left so alone, his last days must have been very confusing.
It does sound like they had a very happy life together, that must be a comfort for everyone who loved them.

Maybe it was too distressing for him, strangers and what have you. My neighbour “turned” on me as his Alzheimers progressed despite helping him out and being friends for years, particularly after his wife died and he didn’t have a clue on the domestic front. He ended up not knowing me and made it clear I wasn’t welcome. Upsetting for everyone.
Privacy concerns - could have also been down to his Hollywood status, chance of someone out there ready to talk to the media. Pride also. They obviously had their reasons, can’t criticise choices as I wasn’t walking in their shoes.

/\...I'm so sorry that happened with your neighbour.
Alzheimer's is a truly horrible illness, your neighbour would not have acted like that if he had been in his right mind. It takes people away from us long before they die.
On a lighter note, reading the link about Gene Hackman, I think he must be the only person in the world (aside from me) who refuses to have a mobile phone.

He wouldn't be making those decisions though, she would. People that deal with alzheimers patients are used to people being belligerent. Comes with the territory.
His wife obviously was very independent. It appears she didn't even go to the doctor with a life threatening disease and tried to treat it herself. I've been reading about Huntavirus. It's nasty and it's very debilitating. Her death would have been very unpleasant.

Thanks Syl. He became verbally abusive towards me on numerous occasions, his daughter was mortified but I knew it was the disease speaking not him so I didn’t take it personally.
lol, make that three of us despite my bank, BT, British Gas etc etc repeatedly asking and being gobsmacked at my not having one. I got rid of my mobile a few years back and have no intention of getting another one. It was a bloody nuisance.

There were two in the house. I think he may have still had one, but she controlled it.
Or she had two, which would be odd unless you have a business and a personal one.

None of us know what arrangements / promises were made re managing his health. She could have been coping admirably, she could have been struggling, no one knows. She / they obviously had their reasons for their current arrangement. Not everyone likes strangers in their daily lives particularly when they feel they are coping. It was reported she visited a chemist maybe it was for stuff to treat, what she could have assumed, was cold/flu like symptoms.
Perhaps she thought she had a heavy cold etc* and was muddling through it as best she could ie she was unaware she had anything more serious…Apparently the late stages of HPS come on rapidly. She had herself, a sick husband and a home to look after so it’s not unusual for someone to push themselves. She seemed to take enough interest in her health, and that of her husband, not to ignore something so serious if she knew.
* “Early symptoms, such as fever, dry cough, body aches, headaches, diarrhea and abdominal pain, are similar to many other viral illnesses. This may prevent an HPS diagnosis before the illness progresses.”

Nobody likes any of the issues of growing old. I understand people not wanting strangers in your home, but at some point you need help. Especially if you are very sick and someone else depends on you.
That level of independence is admirable but also dangerous.
She was one tough human if she died basically on her feet without ever dialing 911.
I haven't been sick since covid in November 2020..But I knew I was in bad shape then and was prepared to call 911 or drive myself to the hospital if I couldn't breathe.
“The first thing is the debt issue, we have a very severe supply-demand problem,” Dalio told CNBC’s Sara Eisen at CONVERGE LIVE in Singapore. ”[The U.S. has] to sell a quantity of debt that the world is not going to want to buy.”
He said this was imminent and of “paramount importance.”
The U.S. deficit needs to go from a projected level of 7.2% of gross domestic product to about 3% of GDP, Dalio said.
” A new four-lane highway cutting through tens of thousands of acresof protected Amazon rainforest is being built for the COP30 climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém.
It aims to ease traffic to the city, which will host more than 50,000 people - including world leaders - at the conference in November.
The state government touts the highway's "sustainable" credentials, but some locals and conservationists are outraged at the environmental impact.
The Amazon plays a vital role in absorbing carbon for the world and providing biodiversity, and many say this deforestation contradicts the very purpose of a climate summit.
Claudio Verequete lives about 200m from where the road will be. He used to make an income from harvesting açaí berries from trees that once occupied the space.
"Everything was destroyed," he says, gesturing at the clearing.
"Our harvest has already been cut down. We no longer have that income to support our family."
He says he has received no compensation from the state government and is currently relying on savings.
He worries the construction of this road will lead to more deforestation in the future, now that the area is more accessible for businesses.
"Our fear is that one day someone will come here and say: 'Here's some money. We need this area to build a gas station, or to build a warehouse.' And then we'll have to leave.
"We were born and raised here in the community. Where are we going to go?" “
I wonder whose bright idea it was to hold it there
The deforestation of the rain forest affects everything....the butterfly effect quote was said in respect of this.
One day it'll all have been taken, God knows how that will affect future generations.
We really are an incredibly stupid species. An abundant Earth which is more the capable of sustaining all of us which we exploit to destruction because of greed.
