The horribly tragic unfolding of the story of Noelia Castillo, 25, from Barcelona, who died on Thursday at the Sant Pere de Ribes assisted living facility after courts overruled her father's efforts to stop the procedure.

A video from Spanish outlet OK Diario shows her tearful friend, Carla Gutierrez, begging two police officers to let her see Castillo one last time.'I need to see her,' she is heard pleading, 'When they moved her to a different school we lost contact, I knew nothing about her, please.'The officers, however, refused the request, stating it was outside their jurisdiction and telling the friend she must respect Castillo's choice.

The girl was gang raped, then tried to commit suicide in 2022 which left her paralyzed.   She was in mental, emotional and physical pain.  So she chose to euthanize herself.

Personally, I think it's her choice and nobody should insist she live beyond what she can endure just to assuage their grief or loss.  It's not about them.  It's about her own choices and what level of suffering she can tolerate.

When this kind of thing is chosen by one so young, it's almost unbearably tragic.    But do you insist that person live for you, or is your love big enough to let them go?

It's a heartbreaking case, she was such a young woman, and she suffered so much. She had a very complicated, abusive life for the 12 years before she made the news this week. I tried to find out what happened to the rapists, but even that is complicated.

"When Castillo was 13, her parents lost their home, and she was taken into social care.[4] Castillo was diagnosed with obsessive–compulsive disorder and borderline personality disorder.[5] She was in social care from July 2015 to February 2019, when she voluntarily left as a legal adult.[6]

Castillo suffered three incidents of sexual abuse that she did not report: one from an ex-partner, another by two men, and a third by three men.[5] While some figures including Vox leader Santiago Abascal disseminated that Castillo was gang-raped by unaccompanied child migrants [es] in her care centre, she did not describe the assailants and said that the incidents happened at nightclubs.[6]

On 4 October 2022, after the second gang rape, Castillo attempted suicide by jumping from a building. She survived, but the incident left her with irreversible paraplegia, accompanied by chronic physical pain, neurological damage, and severe psychological suffering."

Personally, though I would never get over it, I could not stand in the way of my offspring if they genuinely, through either physical or mental pain, did not want to carry on in this life. I think it's 'your life, your decision'.

I agree, she was old enough to make her own decisions.

What must she felt like mentally, raped many times, then physically being paraplegic.  No life.  I couldn't have lived her life either.

Bless her, she's safe and at peace now x

This is such a tragic case, and I'm not sure what I would have done if I were her father.

I think an adult should be able to end their life, and be assisted to do so in a compassionate way, if they have the mental capacity to give consent. It is clear that this young women wanted to do so and probably was distraught her previous attempt failed. It left her paralysed which could only have increased the pain she had to endure on all levels on a daily basis.

Did she have the mental capacity to give consent though? Given her long history of mental health issues as well her high levels of emotional distress then probably not. Maybe her family thought that with time and treatment her condition could have improved and she found the will to live.

Such a difficult thing for everyone involved I guess.

Unsurprisingly, Noelia’s horrifically tragic story is dominating the news headlines over here.

Just heartbreaking and traumatising for all involved. But I’m relieved to know she finally managed to see an end to her suffering, on her own terms.

Rest in eternal peace, guapa 🕊️🕯️

Bless her, may she rest in peace.

I feel everyone should have a choice on how they leave this world, as hard as it is for those being left behind to grieve. I wouldn't want a child of mine to suffer endless pain but I'd find it extremely hard to let them go..a terrible position to be in. May her family find some peace and acceptance as time goes on.

Tragic for everyone concerned.
