After the tragic incident yesterday, where a man was killed by a tiger after climbing into it's enclosure, there is talk that all zoos, wildlife and safari parks should be closed for good.
There are arguments for and against.
Thankfully the tiger will not be euthanised; in the past wild animals have been killed when humans have invaded their space.
Personally, I have hated zoos since I went to Chester Zoo many years ago, and saw a white polar bear, seemingly gone demented.
The poor thing was shaking it's head from side to side, staring into space, it was incredibly upsetting to see.
The elephants, and all the big wild animals are so confined, and though I am sure they are looked after as much as is possible, I think it's cruel to cage them and fence them in.
Safari parks are different. Animals are more in their natural habitat, and species are preserved where otherwise they would become extinct, thanks to mankind.
Maybe we allow dogs if the yards are big enough. Definitely no dogs in apartments.
Horses are fine but we no longer ride them. We just put them in a pasture, feed them and look at them..😉
You are in Texas and your horses are not ridden?.
I am in the outskirts of Manchester, surrounded by horses, and the majority are regularly ridden.
Of course they are ridden. And kept in captivity. I'm asking where we draw the line in terms of animal captivity and the conditions they are exposed to.
I guess I omitted the question marks. They were questions not statements..
I'm going to the zoo in an hour with 4 grandkids. I'm not really into zoos, but they are. The animals are well taken care of. I'll admit their life is unlike that of a wild animal. Better in some ways, worse in others.
Let's take horses in America. Wild horses out west live 10 years less than a horse living on 2 acres in Texas. And it's death is far more gruesome. The "natural" world sounds great in a movie. It's brutal, violent and a daily fight for survival.
Also, I don't think many zoo animals ever lived in the wild..They are offspring of other zoo animals. They don't know how to live in the wild and wouldn't last longer than a beagle dropped off in a national forest in Colorado..
I imagine all animals in today's zoos were born in captivity, it doesn't make it right though....just as many animals performing in circuses knew no other life.
Wild animals in their natural habitat live a far more precarious life than they do when costled in a cage, but it's their natural life they are living.
Some research has shown that up to 80% of animals in zoos suffer from abnormal repetitive behaviour linked to psychological illness.
Zoo animals could still be protected in safari parks. Introduce them slowly, and I'm sure they would still breed and live their lives in a far more natural habitat suited to them.

There's a guy in Africa I think, called the Lion Whisperer. He's been rescuing them for nigh on 30 yrs. They have so much space, acres and acres of land. He has Hyenas, Black.Panthers aswell as lions. They all know him. It's a great to watch him interact with them.
They are so healthy, happy. If they were in the wild they would be shot by hunters. Elephants are shot for their tusks.
The men working there hunt these hunters, try to stop them.
Hunters are dispicable lowlives!

I have read a bit about him Mags, Kevin Richardson.
I think perhaps the young man who was killed by the tiger a couple of days ago, thought he could communicate with them in some way.
It's really sad, he was obviously unwell, I can't imagine what his family are going through.
