How can an ip address reveal your post code?....as far as I'm aware it cant.

My IP swaps and changes all the time, even when I am posting from the same location.

Much as I don't like guest posting, the fact is Dogs has always thrived on it.....threaten the guests (who are probably 99% members anyway) and you are threatening the forum....imho.

I saw "Dogs" mentioned a lot on DS and then someone posted a link. I read the Dogs Forum for a while but unless you know the posters and what happened on past forums, it seems to be the same arguments over and over ...

I don't believe that the IP does show a post code and even if it did, why would an owner or moderator of a site be boasting about it?

As the only one on both Dogs and here to work in a professional capacity with developing websites & web APIs (feel free to ask. Oh, you asked - C# WebAPI impl with Web controller returning JSON over an SSL connection) ..

You can't trace a postcode by an IP address. Sites like IP2Location can give you an approximation, but they cannot pinpoint you to exactly where you stay.

In addition a lot of IP addresses, like mine, actually point at the data centre of the business (e.g. Sky, Virgin, BT etc) which could be in another region of the UK entirely. Mine resolves to 15 miles away from where I actually live.

When Google were driving through your street to build their Street View they *did* hoover up a lot of IP addresses to build up their Google Maps location trace service ( see: www.theregister.co.uk/2010/04/22/google_streetview_logs_wlans/ ), but that information is not publicly available and even if it was, unless you're using the same router from 8 years ago, you will have nothing to worry about.

You *can* trace someone to where they work, if they post from work using their works internet connection. As a lot of people post using mobile phones & 4G these days (including me) then the chances of being traced are slim. The cops can trace you, but I doubt anyone on Dogs can.

If anyone keeps up this pish of tracing, I will roast them. I hope the mods are not trying to scare posters with potential doxing. I can see data protection act issues. And aye, I just sat a GDPR test as part of my job.

You are talking a load of shite. No such program exists.

Reason being that with DHCP the IP address you were using yesterday could be assigned to someone miles away from you today. 20 metres? Pah.

You'd need a vector into BT, Sky, Virgin etc. to get the current user. Or the police computer, which would make you a target for the security services - did you post here using a proxy? If not, you've fucked up really badly!!!

The only way without hacking to get a real postal address is to get the IP, which you asked for, phone the company involved and use social engineering, supplying the name and electronic signature which you also asked for, to get an address. 

Stop trying to worry the gullible, you target!!!!

What I said was serious though. There is no one program that can trace all IPs to an exact home address. 

I expect the police and security services would need a warrant to get someone's address from the ISP concerned.

 

I really do think IP address sharing threats would be frowned on by any data protection officers on any host. People are concerned about their privacy these days.
