Same here, and I did have a think when I started the thread.
There was one poster many moons ago, we were friends once but she had issues. After the friendship ended she would trawl round various forums saying bad things about me, eventually I bit back and it ended quite badly.
She died, I always regretted not just ignoring her.
The saddest thing was she was also known on a forum where the posters knew in each other in real life. They had warned me not to get involved with her because they actually knew of old how she was. When she passed not one person had a nice thing to say about her.
I found that really sad.
No - I have always tried to be decent and it has cost me - but the worst fucking liars are always believed.

No they are not.
They may be tolerated (not on here so much) but I think most decent posters can work out pretty quickly who are liars and who are genuine.
I agree with you both as it happens.
People tend to work out who the truly nasty individuals are but to do so means getting past petty forum spats and getting to know the real person.
Alot of posters don't wish to bother doing that or don't have the opportunity to do that. Judging people by soundbites on a forum is likely to be unreliable.
However as John said in my experience being transparent and nice will cost you as trolls may perceive you to be an easy target. I don't think constantly nasty people can be truly happy though.
