Hello JD, I was not aware your former name started with a K. Hats off to you for standing your ground though I have not always agreed with you.

Back to the topic.  You said you are not worried, be thankful about that as the last thing our planet wants is mass deaths. I still fear a massive breakout if we remain complacent. Imagine you are in China, one of the twenty odd cities in lock-down, the pandemic has arrived for them. It is easy to a initiate a quarantine  status but much more difficult to unfold EG, the SARS virus, in Canada I think a hospital went into lock-down and no one was allowed to leave then the unlock after two weeks and then the virus reappeared.

So I trust China, the simple answer is no. My knowledge of the worse disasters are the unexpected ones or where people, countries have been complacent. Just imagine a town the size of Coventry in lock-down for several weeks if we are luck. It's not just the financial implications that could cost billions but mass deaths.

I propose that we ban all flights from China at the very least and check everyone that arrived from China during the last three weeks.  I also fear the that we will soon be the victims of a virus that is resistant to all known antibiotics.

A very good post but I honestly think that this will be a relatively 'minor' outbreak both in severity of the virus and the number of deaths (which is of course no comfort to the poor families who have lost loved ones) and certainly would hate to be proved wrong if the number of victims does exponentially escalate.

You do make an excellent point about complacency - we must always be on our guard and who knows what the future may bring?

Have a good evening. :)

Some press  and news reports are indicating that the virus has arrived in Brumingham as specialists were seen carring away a man in a mask and they were wearing those funny suits.

A leather mask perchance? Hoover appliances figuring in the accident?

Just a resident internet legend's indulgences gone wrong probably.

The first two confirmed cases of people carrying the Coronavirus in the UK have been taken to Newcastle. They were staying in York.. having recently returned from China.

Does anyone know what the fatality / recovery rate is?  Does everyone who gets it die or is it a small proportion that dies?  I assume that if people recover then those people would have developed anti-bodies from which vaccines could be created.

It's early days obviously, but so far more infected people have died than have recovered.

I thought it was the opposite Syl?

Around 12,000 cases with a death toll of 259 so far - that's a mortality rate of about 4.6%.

This report is from yesterday, already it's out of date, but there does seem to be more people dying of the virus so far than people  making a full recovery ….I suppose the emphasis is on the 'full' recovery.

"More people have died from the coronavirus than have made a full recovery from it, according to the latest data.

The most recent statistics show that there have been 9,776 confirmed cases in 23 countries. It total,  there have been 213 recorded deaths - but, so far, only 187 patients have made a full recovery, with more than 9,500 people still infected.

The data, compiled by the  Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering in Baltimore in the US, is only updated once a day - so the UK has not yet been added. Consequently the UK does not yet appear among the countries with confirmed cases."
