 b) because they enjoy it.

Like any vicious activity that they hope will impact  their chosen target negatively. It is just the online equivalent of being harassed by the boorish  workplace bully.

I'm sure the trolls didn't think Caroline Flack would take her own life. If she hadn't been vulnerable mentally and constantly judged I'm sure the insignificant mutterings  of a largely anonymous mob would have meant nothing to a vivacious , attractive woman with family and friends who loved her dearly.

The problem is people can be anyone they want on line. Their social media profile might depict a slim , book loving moral person who would do no one any harm when really they are overweight, lonely  and ignored. As a result they feel nothing but loathing and envy for someone they perceive to have everything they want and can never have. This is just one stereotypical example.

But when Flack reads the judgemental posts from this person,  considers how kind and moral this profile proclaims to be. .she starts to consider that maybe this vicious troll hiding behind an ethical facade is right about her. Then more pile on, anonymous mob, fake and real profiles alike,  until it's all too much. The words are a weight she cannot bear and before anyone is able to provide real life perspective and support the lies told by trolls become the truth in her mind. Then it's too late.

Everyone has a moral obligation to treat people with kindness in times of uncertainty like this imo. The old adage may be a cliché but it's a true one "He without Sin cast the first stone". If those cowards  hadn't decided to mercilessly troll her for fun, sport or out of  jeslousy and spite Caroline Flack would still be alive today.

The trolls will  naturally argue they had no idea she was vulnerable,  it's only words on a screen and people can log off , it was just "a laff innit" but who remembers the online troll who abused the McCanns ,  her vicious tongue exposed to the whole world and she too, took her own life. More misery for another innocent family.  

There have been enough suicides, teenagers and adults both, caused by online abuse for people to just stop hiding behind the tired old excuses. If you wouldn't say it in real life, don't type it online, especially if it's to a stranger who doesn't deserve your vile virtuol. 

Sorry for long post. Of course things won't change and people will continue to behave appallingly and I believe new laws may have to be introduced. They won't stop people being breathtakingly rude and  evil either. People just enjoy trying to upset people too much. It's a sad shocking state of affairs but I doubt it will ever change.

But I expect someone will admit to being one (anonymously of course) eventually just to try and get a reaction.
