That is my point, many people are so selfish and have no self control at all now, it's me, me, me.

 That was my point too.

Disasters are supposed to rally communities not divide them. But the grabbers make things a lot worse for the ones in need.

I just hope enough people do look out for each other, especially now.

This is what I hope too.

The elderly and frail will need special attention as will anyone with respiratory problems, asthma etc.

Sporting events will have to be cancelled.

Music festivals,  any occasion with over 1000 people in one gathering will be cancelled.

What does this mean for schools, pupils sitting their A Levels and GCSE's?  Hospitals are already at breaking point..they simply will buckle and collapse under the strain of all the desperate patient's needing care.

Leading global health scholars insist we "maintain social distance "I. E isolate oneself. How is this possible in hospital -it simply is not. Staff and patients alike will become infected.

It's not the time for political gripes but whilst Boris is insisting cuts are needed he somehow miraculously finds 30 billion pounds to assist in containing the virus. That is quite a sum  of money to have at hand. .whilst telling the country previously that cuts in the deprived NHS were entirely out of necessity.

However we do need to all pull together now. Things are going to get worse before they get better. People will have to follow rules, stop being so selfish or others will suffer the consequences of their greed. It's a test of human nature at its current  most unraveled state.

Healthy people need not panic, they are likely to just have a dry cough and pass the symptoms along to two others. Two people become four. And eight and so on. But the elderly and frail will contract it and will certainly get very ill, likely a 1000 individuals  will have passed by sometime  next week  due to the virus.

So will healthy folk wash their hands for the required two minutes with the specific technique or forget or not always bother? Will they self distance as has been recommended? We all need to learn to incorporate some fairly radical changes into our daily lives or those who are powerless will perish.  The virus can  be fatal but if we do as experts insist the death count need not be do brutal.

It really is up to us. It's time to consider other people and be a community.

Yep…..good post.

We as a free country are not used to feeling helpless in the grip of something that is out of control and has to run it's course, peoples lives will change whether they want them to or not.
Like you say the majority who do get ill will recover with little or no ill effects, but a minority of people will not. Some of the minority could be someone you love.

The best thing people can do for others is to stay away from them if they feel ill. I don't want people passing on the virus to me because they are too selfish to isolate themselves for a few days, I have just recovered from the norovirus that knocked me for six for 2 weeks (incidentally I did self isolate with that so kept my germs to myself)

if you can. keep away from crowds, change your social life for a few weeks, wash your hands well and often....and stop bloody hoarding extra goods and food that you probably wont need ...because it's your actions that are depriving others of essentials.

Thank you.

This disease is a fire and humans are the fuel.  It is clear what is happening - Italy is the example.   China we are not sure how reliable are the figures - that is the figures from China are likely to underestimate the situation because of the politics of reporting in China (a socialist-communist state).

Current figures for Italy:  cases 15113  Deaths 1016 Recoveries 1258

The UK have to close all universities, schools, anywhere where there are large gathering of people, especially when there are people who have recently arrived back from hot spots.

London Underground driver tests positive for coronavirus

The driver, based at the North Greenwich depot, had recently returned from a holiday in Vietnam.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-51868904

Spain have just declared a state of emergency following a large jump in number of deaths.   Clearly the UK are way behind the curve in doing anything which suggests the likelihood of large numbers having it.

The numbers here have jumped dramatically today, thankfully, unlike other places, so far it's not proving fatal for many.
Some nursing and care homes are closing doors to visitors to try and protect the vulnerable residents and the care staff.
Little gestures like this will help to curtail the virus.....and the government now need to step up their own policies to try to stop us going the same way as Italy has..

A key factor is the number of intensive care beds / provisions in hospitals.  When the care system gets swamped that is when the number of people dying rises dramatically.  That is why it is important to put restrictions in place now.

We are now said to be about 4 weeks behind where Italy is at the moment....Four weeks to try to manage and prevent the terrible devastation they are seeing right now.

Hopefully, now the numbers are increasing more and more on a daily basis the government will do more to protect the population before we end up like this.

"ROME — The mayor of one town complained that doctors were forced to decide not to treat the very old, leaving them to die. In another town, patients with coronavirus-caused pneumonia were being sent home. Elsewhere, a nurse collapsed with her mask on, her photograph becoming a symbol of overwhelmed medical staff.

In less than three weeks, the coronavirus has overloaded the health care system all over northern Italy. It has turned the hard hit Lombardy region into a grim glimpse of what awaits countries if they cannot slow the spread of the virus and ‘‘flatten the curve’’ of new cases — allowing the sick to be treated without swamping the capacity of hospitals.

If not, even hospitals in developed countries with the world’s best health care risk becoming triage wards, forcing ordinary doctors and nurses to make extraordinary decisions about who may live and who may die. Wealthy northern Italy is facing a version of that nightmare already.

This is a war,” said Massimo Puoti, the head of infectious medicine at Milan’s Niguarda hospital, one of the largest in Lombardy, the northern Italian region at the heart of the country’s coronavirus epidemic.

This week Italy put in place draconian measures — restricting movement and closing all stores except for pharmacies, groceries and other essential services. But they did not come in time to prevent the surge of cases that has deeply taxed the capacity even of a well-regarded health care system.

Italy’s experience has now underscored the need to act decisively — quickly and early — well before case numbers even appear to reach crisis levels. By that point, it may already be too late to prevent a spike in cases that stretches systems beyond their limits."

That is an excellent post guesty.

Sadly the situation in Italy just seems to be getting worse even after the lockdown, 250 deaths in 24 hours, a new record. :(

Does the high death toll in Italy not reflect the high population of elderly the country have.

434 deaths in the last 24 hours, the rate seems to be going up exponentially as is usual for Pandemics, grim stuff.

Deaths in the UK are steadily climbing now. The number is up 33 from yesterday.... latest count 104.
God knows what it'll be this time next week.

Hub saw out neighbour and rid him we will help or do things if he has to stay in.  He's got emphysema, so might need help.  Also another neighbour has asthma, so will help her if she needs it aswell.  Just making sure all are ok. So doesn't hurt to help others.

How lovely of you Mags. nod

Grim news today with well over a 1000 deaths in 24 hours and Italy passing China in fatalities.

What was interesting on the news was there is very little evidence of panic buying in Italy - which is in stark contrast to many idiots here.

They did their panic buying last month.  Starving isn’t the issue here. Smokers are at risk though.

So the government have now ordered all café bars, theatres, leisure centres etc to close down as from tonight.

Wonder how long before the complete lockdown of the UK?

Not long I expect, anther huge rise in deaths in the last 24 hours in Italy (627) - and that is despite the total crackdown there.

It all makes very grim reading indeed.
