... Society has become evermore vicious, vacuous and vile. Drunk on its own obsession with aesthetics and appearance over reality. Hundred pounds for a gaudy handbag is hundred pounds not given to charity, not given to the poor, you might as well be chucking it down the drain.
Those not born in wartime never learnt...
... if karma was involved here I wouldn't be at all surprised... gang bullying and toxic trolling...
A good thing to come out of this is enforced empathy for others... it will be a chilling lesson...
After this terrifying ordeal where... the previous innate attributes of greed, selfishness and just plain nastiness may have evaporated and a generation of empathetic considerate individuals will stand in their place...
An interesting read but idealistic in nature with a few inconsistencies. For example if greed, selfishness and nastiness is innate, why would they evaporate? Does history support the idea that society is getting more vicious rather than less vicious? When you talk about society getting more vacuous and vile are you talking about all members of society or just a certain part of that society? What is happening now is very minor compared to other things that have occurred in the past. Famines, floods, epidemics, war, brutality are common themes in human history. The West post WWII has seen a period of stability, freedom, widening democracy.
I was looking through an old fashion mag, endkess models pouting and posing. .literally 15 pages of adverts for high end hundred pound handbags and perfumes before any articles began. Said articles how to get the perfect "eyeliner flick" , how to "rock" a pixie cut and a designer refusing to use female models above size 6 at his runway show. His ethics were a tad lacking but women trolling him on social media saying he deserved to die I didnt feel was really the appropriate way to combat the sexist perfectionist world of high end fashion.

Those not born in wartime never learnt true heartfelt feelings like empathy or loyalty, I really feel this. I prefer the company of older people because for the most part they are more civilised and intelligent than younger people who are self complacent and entitled. The fighting and grabbing of supermarket goods, not caring who else may be in need is typical of how selfish human beings have become . So is the open flouting of the recommendations of the PM although I do believe he intended to ban non essential businesses opening anyway. The message was delivered in bite size pieces so not to cause mass alarm and panic but the agenda was highly transparent.
This doesn't apply to everyone of course but seeing the footage of the Nurse weeping because people had stripped the supermarket shelves bare made me think if karma was involved here I wouldn't be at all surprised. Seeing the way people behave on social media and forums even, the isolating of those considered different, the gang bullying and toxic trolling, well won't this be a wake up call for people who thought driving people to despair was merely a fun way to wile away the time.
A good thing to come out of this is enforced empathy for others, as now people are now no longer permitted to stockpile they are being forced to consider other people's needs. If someone's loved one becomes ill because they continued to go out it will be a chilling lesson to learn but maybe at last people will learn to actually care for their elders and even feel genuine regret. That would really be something. The isolation will provide thinking time and people will realise how lucky they truly were before the virus demolished their lives and they will learn to feel gratitude too. They may learn to cook, help assist with children, actually pick up a book or kindle.,although that may be too much to hold for.
After this terrifying ordeal where twenty thousand deaths nationwide is considered a hopeful figure the previous innate attributes of greed, selfishness and just plain nastiness may have evaporated and a generation of empathetic considerate individuals will stand in their place. If any good comes out of this mess it will be this.
Give it a fucking rest for Christ’s sake.
Lol.
The Earth is already starting to replenish itself as humans have been forced to self isolate, even in such a brief amount of time.
Dolphins have been seen back off the coast of Italy due to the lack of cruise liners.
The rivers in Venice are so clear you can actually see the fish! This is unheard of.
Mother Earth is looking after herself by producing the Coronavirus which is it's own vaccination against the virus which is constantly attacking it.
That is us. We are the virus.
So no "Anon", I won't give it a "fucking " rest. Humans need to learn if they continue to destroy their precious home it will of course try and protect itself from their attacker. Us. If we can't even respect each other whst chance have we respecting the Earth?

Actually during WW2 people tended to pull together and help each other, we were all fighting the same foe and therefore on the same side. Petty squabbling subsided and community spirit thrived, neighbours were not just the people next door who you tried to avoid eye contact with for example, as you may have to share a man made shelter with them as the air raid sirens shrieked their blood curdling warning.
There was a common enemy so a sense of camaraderie emerged, all hostilities put on hold for what was called the "war effort", voluntary work, making meals for those who were sick, donating unneeded furniture to those whose homes were bombed etc.
Look at the contrasting behaviour now, are people assisting and looking out for each other as was the innate feeling in the war? Where is that feeling of duty to do what's right? No, people are greedily stockpiling without a thought for the vulnerable people who may need these products. We have footage of people physically fighting each other for toilet rolls and thoughtlessly flouting the social distancing rule, knowing that it could be dangerous. But they simply don't care.
The Towie generation's mentality really doesn't stretch much further than "nah, I'm not staying home, I'm off out to to get mortal, innit"
The PM pleaded with people to stay at home , a large number ignored him and went to a concert or the pub while they could. Such selfishness would have been unthinkable once upon a time, there was a stoic British attitude of no matter what the hardship, we will not falter .
It's all "me me me" now and bugger everybody else so yes British society has certainly changed. The greed and laziness on this country is off the charts.
I think the rise in social media where anonymity has inevitably led to a lack of empathy has contributed massively to this, as has the importance placed on image and status which are frivolous self centeted concerns. Bigotry and a desire for division has grown where once people united in diversity they now want to be isolated and think only of themselves.
Thank you for this one Digger. Things like that make it a lot easier to explain to people especially the children. There is a handwashing video that is also good for children to understand.
The kids are being involved in many things. all putting paintings .inspirational messages, little bears ( bear hunt) in the windows for other children to see when they need to go for an isolated walk round the block.
The older two are ok but the baby doesn't understand why she cannot see me but we all facetime and that's a blessing. Although the baby walks around with me on the phone so she can see me but I have to lay down after as she can't hold it still and swings me around and it makes me feel a bit sick.
Stay safe Diggs and everyone . See you on the other side.

Hi, I would say the above is still a bit idealistic but today's generation has been moulded to be a "me me me" society and this is said to be progressive. Traditional institutions have been attacked and diminished, there is no longer an English Christian or British Christian Society - the buzz words today are diversity, independence to be yourself, individuality, everything goes. Look up mass society - we are a mass society and no longer a civil society. Mass society is the consumer democratic society and education has changed so new generations are taught this and expect this. We are taught individuality, to affirm our individual rights, my body my right etc. In the past there were extended families living near to each other, then came the nuclear family, and now the family unit has been dismantled as our society moves towards pure individuality.
I was asked a question Guesty based on my post, sorry if I missed a reply from you.
I meant primarily people who had taken their own lives due to toxic trolling, Caroline Flack for example. Online abuse is only a part of the shift in attitude in modern times but I think it is a valid point when people end their lives due to the mental cruelty.
So example of how family units have changed and consequences. In the past grandparents may have lived in the same house as their childrens family or nearby, and looked after by the family or extended family when aged. Nowadays they live separately, possibly in different cities and even in different countries. When they are aged they are shipped to care home facilities.
In Spain care homes have been found abandoned with several aged people found dead in their beds.

I have also compared the treatment Caroline Flack received by trolls to the treatment some people have received on forums....trolling, bullying and posting bile hidden behind anon can have the same effect on their chosen 'victim' whether they are in the public eye or not.

There is a serious issue with extinctions of large mammals. Zoos have to be part of a mechanism to preserve them. Rhinos are rapidly heading for extinction with some sub-species already gone. Even Zoo rhinos have been attacked for their horns. Extinction results from loss of habitat (the most serious threat - whole ecosystems are destroyed / changed), fragmentation of habitats (roads, railway-lines, overland pipes, new settlements - most serious for migratory animals) and unregulated hunting. Controlled game hunting is one practical solution for non-migratory species - the money that brings in helps to pay for armed wardens (that also act as guides for wealthy hunters).
With regard zoos there is awareness of the need to provide such animals interesting enclosed environments and as much activity as possible. Animals enclosed in too small enclosures often exhibit pacing - repetitive backwards and forwards motion.
So example of how family units have changed and consequences. In the past grandparents may have lived in the same house as their childrens family or nearby, and looked after by the family or extended family when aged. Nowadays they live separately, possibly in different cities and even in different countries. When they are aged they are shipped to care home facilities.

I saw that and couldn't believe it. The disdain for the elderly in caring homes is unjust and a totally abhorrent attitude as it is, but that really shows the lack of morals in people now. Something is very wrong with society today.
The lack of empathy for others is making some individuals borderline sociopathic. I agree Guesty, when family stayed together and remained close people innately cared more and had compassion.
Sadly compassion for each other, which is essential for a content productive society, seems to be evaporating and a chilling indifferent void left in it's place.
