I have always imagined that chat forums are part of social media.

Forums are like twitter but with a smaller number of people and with longer comments.

Some forums are like a facebook group.

Does anyone agree with me that it is correct to call chat forus part of social media?

made the internet a nicer place to be over the last 3 or 4 weeks?

I'm not on any SM sites. There's plenty of similar material on YouTube and newspaper articles, including readers' comments. Very useful for helping people cope with this fearful pandemic.

I keep meaning to make time to have a glance at mumsnet but never, ever get round to it lol.

 Oh you would love Mumsnet.

Digger was banned the first day she joined and I got into a huge row after making only a couple of posts....it was fun.happy

Ooooh the drama!   sf  sf  sf

Thanks for the headsup Syl, they sound terrifying ……....  I won't join but I'll have a quick squint now & then, sounds fun. :)

I doubt you would last longer than Digs! lol

The thread that got us into so much drama was one about.....should a man let the woman he is with  take the first taxi home after a night out?

We soon realised we were dealing with a bunch of die hard women's libbers who found it insulting that anyone could believe that yes....it would make sense not to leave a woman alone on the street in the middle of the night whilst her date sailed off home in his nice warm cab.

 Sounds a bit like DS

 Mumsnet is hard core

It's about the same.  Its always been sorta what you make if it. There is a group for everyone. I think I'm on 20 different bike groups. I'm also on groups that do politics, real estate and other topics.

Speaking of social media, some tweets don't age well.

Almost every event I attend (or used to) is located and scheduled through my social media.

Lets say there is a ride 100 miles away, or a concert in Dallas. I first find the event based on Facebook followings, then I check interested, or going. Now it's scheduled in my events. I can review my scheduled events from my phone at any time. Facebook, when used properly really enriches your life in terms of doing things.

Same as forums then. You can enjoy them and use them as a hobby, you can learn a lot from the various threads and differing opinions from people you would probably never encounter in real life, or you can choose to use them to troll round incognito.

A few years book I used facebook to find missing family members and someone elses missing family member.  I got a few names from a genealogy search then sent a few queries to possible people and took it from there.  That was the only time I used facebook.  I haven't integrated social media socially into my life but I do use it as a tool for learning.

You can learn about human nature.  Trolls are one part of human nature.  They way they operate I can see links to the way people in real life operate in the workplace and elsewhere.  I don't want to get too close to them and end up being a victim of their trolling - that's why I never joined up as a forum member on dogs.

If a SJW means wanting fair treatment for all its not desired on forums. I have been a member of 5 or 6 and have made one true friend for life. happy But the rest of the  nutjobs are too much like hard work lol

It's often the owners and mods that are the most dishonest.  (No, I don't mean here. It seems alright to me)

Sorta. But social media is used to make folks money, attend events, find out about crime in your neighborhood, follow influential people or artists you like.

Social Media can and should be used to add to reality.

Forums are places where people have fake names and escape from reality.

I'm sure social media is used to many peoples advantage, especially now whilst people are isolated.

But also,  from what I have gathered a lot of people who post on social media are false and looking for the approval and likes from total strangers....living an online life completely different to reality.

You get that on forums to of course, but it seems a minority of people on forums go out of their way to be disliked rather than liked.

I think like you said earlier....we can get out of forums/social media whatever we like ....we just have to pick wisely.

An SJW should want fair and equal treatment for all, but too many of them seek to just invert injustice and create a new elite.

An example would be supporting equal treatment of transexuals which then morphs into you must wax my balls because I identify as female.

I think some forums are almost text book studies in collective hysteria like the Salem Witch trials. Stuff simply gets made up and then it becomes touted as fact.

Twitter is just as twisted as it always is.

Some good news on Twitter in the last few days, the pervert Jessica Yaniv has been banned.

I'm not sure what was the final straw, the death threats, the doxing, cracking jokes about Coronavirus.

You can do a fake profile, but that won't do you much good except to troll some new sites. Most people on Facebook don't even post on news sites. They are interested in social events and discussions with people they are acquainted with or related to.

There are so many things now that are only on social media, I'm not sure how folks operate without it. If I plan an event, all my invites go out through social media. If you're not on social media, you won't get invited (except my friend Erin. She's very cute and I will sometimes send her a text as she is the only person I know without Facebook, as she only does IG  wink ).
