 They are good, but not 100% at preventing an infected person from transmitting the virus to others I believe.

I have worn a mask for most of my life - one look at my ugly mug and people kept turning to bloody stone.

 Nothing is one hundred percent safe but it is easy to see that wearing one clearly reduces the chances you spreading the virus and to a good degree keeping you safer. Being safer when wearing one will depend on close fitting of the mask and other sensible precautions. Wearing one clearly has advantages and Britain will soon change her view on this.

So wear it if you have one or use a scarf, cut a sheet to size and so on.

Until enough time passes or they get a test to prove if they have Covid or if its another problem causing their cough.

 Agreed that the evidence is patchy, but so was the seriousness of Covid19 in January and early February. If we are to believe everything the British government says, you

may recall they were advocating waiting longer for a lock down then bang, number shot up. Clearly, wearing a mask helps in the vast majority of circumstances.

 

 

ASK yourself this. Why do NHS staff and most people in hospital near the Covid wards wear masks? I think we all know the answer.  You may also be aware why your government is not advocating the wearing of masks in public as per the original post.

 Regarding lockdowns hindsight is a wonderful thing. Going by the statistics that we have out there alone you could indeed make claims that several Countries locked down too late. This virus of course is NEW. That obviously made a difference. Its harder to read even more so in those earlier stages. 

As I've said in a previous post. If someone feels that they should be wearing something over their face, be it a scarf or something then for sure there is clearly no harm at all doing that.

The masks NHS staff wear are usually different to the ones most of the general public can get hold of. And these people have been trained on how to fit and wear this gear properly. Also the viral load NHS and various care staff are faced with is far higher than the viral load your average joe in public will come into contact with. That makes a difference. Once again though if people wanna wear a mask of some sort, it obviously won't do any harm.

Also don't forget there is a global shortage of protective gear going on. A search on google will tell you that we are not the only Country somewhat struggling to get supplies. So yeah I'm not sure any government is in a position to hand over high quality masks like an N95 for example.

 JP, I did mention home made masks. My dad is a builder and already had many FFP3 masks as he bulk buys them they are supposed to close to medical specs. He sent us a few.

We have made our own and many people have and some shops selling home made ones, FFP3 is not N95 but I think dad said it was close to 99.8% filtration if worn properly. I can safely say and bet every penny I have that the British government will recommend wearing of masks in public and make it mandatory on public transport. They will say it was the "science" that advised them to wear masks but you need to ask them how the science changed and why NHS staff were wearing them.

 

Not sure how it works in Britain but in the USA they have the Defence Production Act/DPA I think it called where the president orders companies to make things. Why you over there have not done that for masks is beyond me.

 Well you know someone who knows more about masks than the average joe. So that's good for you guys. The Government advisers have said a few times just recently that they are currently discussing mask wearing for the general public. Science will change especially for this virus, as its new. Have western Countries advised the general public to wear masks before due to a virus? I know Asian Countries general public wear them due to smog in the main. NHS and other care sectors wearing them is a tad different I explained why I think that's the case in the previous post.

I don't think our Government 'orders' as such anyone to make these things. But there has been plenty of discussion gone on with various companies. And many companies are making things they don't usually make.

Not really because he is a classic narcissist psychopath with his finger on the red button who stands like an alpha male chimp trying to intimidate people and throws a tantrum if anyone dares to call him to account like a spoilt toddler.

You really need to watch this. Joe has been around a long time. He never sounded or acted like this until very recently. This man is not ready for prime time. He is starting to get embarrassing. 

I guess the thought is, you will vote for his VP as she will be running the country. Joe will be off in a room mumbling to himself in the event he were to win. 

If you have watched someone start to lose it like Joe is, it's sad.

He doesn't need to be doing it in front of the whole world, but that's where we are.
