He was a man who was murdered by a corrupt policeman, and the cop will face justice, which is more than many other corrupt cops have done in the past and no doubt the future.. George Floyd was certainly not a saint...and I agree that the funeral, which was televised in full on many TV channels over here, was ridiculous.
Why did you watch it then? Disrespectful to insult his family like this.
I didn't watch it, I logged in here and had a laugh at some ridiculous comments left by cowardly guests like yourself to lighten the mood.

I despair of the younger generation. A generation turned soft and selfish through a lifetime of never really having to worry about much other than how good they look in selfies; that the yardstick of personal integrity is how many 'likes' you get on Facebook.
Not just the younger generation. Only recently a middle aged Dogs admin posted a selfie to the squeals of delight and lots of 'likes' from her admirers.

The fight against racism was won, the minute the officer who was quite blatantly guilty was arrested and charged. Not when statues of people no one had ever heard of were pulled down or leigh whatsisname apologised for Bo Selecta, or Little Britain was taken off Netflix.
These token gestures are not winning any wars. I rather think they're hinting at a another form of supremacy trying to muscle its way in. We've gone from MLK marching for the right to be judged on the content of his character, to some corrosive belief that well actually skin colour/gender/sexuality are absolutely essential and primary to how someone should be thought of and treated.
This is a situation being exploited not one being addressed.
What is really getting to me now is the way everyone is expected to apologise to everyone else for....everything.
First BREXIT.....two sides for and against, both blaming each other, not accepting the outcome, demanding apologies from people who voted to leave and trying to brow beat them to vote again to stay.
The country will be ruined, apologise for ruining it....if it works out you apologise for expecting me to apologise to you.
PANDEMIC....the government has been asked to apologise for the way it's been handled from the start, thousands of lives have been lost because the lockdown started too late....No it started too early, that's why thousand more are suffering. They didn't do enough to help financially, they did too much, who is going to pay for it all?? Why don't they apologise for the mess, why don't they apologise for the pandemic, why don't they apologise for the pandemic targeting black people and fat men???
BLM.....yes of course they do, if you point out that all lives matter you are a racist, apologise. And whilst you are at it apologise for what your ancestors did 400 years ago, and put your money where your mouth is because an apology isn't enough. It's not enough that the majority of people abhor racism, sexism, homophobia, ageism, and want fair play for all....apologise for being born white...just apologise for being born and have done with it.
Well after seeing those white US cops washing the feet of black faith leaders nothing surprises me anymore.
I am sick of the UK being called a racist nation - we are just about the most tolerant in the world.
How do you know? Have you travelled the world?
Heve you? If so where's your Nirvana. Where's the country that gets it right and should be the model held up to the UK as it's goal.

This has been obvious right from the start, some of the blanket comments about white people I have seen on the news would be seen as unforgivably racist and cause total outrage if it was the other way around.
Especially about us in the UK - have these people never heard of Wilberforce for example?

I despair of the younger generation. A generation turned soft and selfish through a lifetime of never really having to worry about much other than how good they look in selfies; that the yardstick of personal integrity is how many 'likes' you get on Facebook. I'm getting to the stage where I really mourn how things used to be. Life is never easy for most of us, but I grew up in a time when you could walk miles to school, go play out with your mates and not worry about being mugged or molested. There seemed to be less fear, less complications than now. I'd truly hate to be a teenager now. It was trying enough back then without the added social media bullying, societal pressures, school exam pressures, physical striving for perfection stuff kids have to put up with now. We had less. But we had more freedom.
I agree with the freedom aspect, and life was so much simpler, and there were reasons for that.
Back in the 60's and 70's there was much less diversity. Simply put, most people were either white, straight, rich, poor, women knew their place, anyone who was not in the vast majority groups were either discriminated against or hidden.
Changes happen, some good some bad, and it's when people cant/wont/are unable to adapt to changes that problems, as we have seen escalate in the last few decades, arise.
I was born in London, and diversity was all around. I'm not talking about ethnicity anyway. I'm talking about people's mindsets as opposed to then. Now, it feels more constricted. More controlled. The way it's going nobody will be able to do or say anything without rules and regulations breathing down your neck. Freedom of speech is slowly being eroded.
I thank God we do have diversity of cultures, and have always embraced other cultures, it's what makes our country so interesting. The racists in this country are in the minority. Most of us don't even think that way. We just want to get along and live our lives.
You are right, everything is overly complicated now. Young women, filling their faces and lips with chemicals, getting comedy eyebrows tattooed onto their foreheads, just so you can do your best trout pout to excite shallow youths sexually. It’s some kind of weird exploitation.
this is supposed to be being your very best but it’s sad that very young women are willing to become fake Barbie Dolls in order to be popular with their peers and boys. I hate what they have become, it’s so very sad.
This is completely off topic. What has women seeking plastic surgery got to do with racism?
Not all young women do it for the reasons you suggest , it's just sloppy stereotyping. Some women have these procedures for themselves, to declare it's just for men is very condescending and also wrong. What about the many young men who invest in botox etc too, especially on the gay scene?
why you have chosen to target one gender on one aspect of ageism on a thread primarily about racism is your own issue. But maybe think twice before critiquing other posters for posting off topic. As you have shown here it's fairly common.

I think it was Holly. I saw her pic up a while ago, she looked very pretty too imo.
I don't know whether it was a selfie or someone else took the pic, but didn't the other mod Mes used to have obvious selfies up all the time?

Ah. I think her doing so was a mistake so we shall agree to disagree.
Yes Mes posted nice selfies I thought, which contrasted unflattering pics of her elsewhere. No one is perfect.
People seem to think if you reach a certain age you should cover yourself in a blanket lest you offend. It's a very superficial world sadly which causes so many unnecessary woes and universal self loathing.
Not sure who thinks when people reach a certain age they should hide away, I have never met anyone like that in the real world.
Online who cares what people think. The ones who use age or looks as an insult against others are probably, older, fatter, uglier, but definately less assured than the people they are trying to put down.

Anyone who insults someone honest enough to show their photo is like a primary school bully.
It's pathetic.

I distinctly remember a former member who thinks she’s a gorgeous young thing constantly refer to older women as elderly. In particular IIRC Prof Mary Beard. I wonder whatever happened to her...

I know who you’re on about.
Who was that?
Mary is great!

What happened to Mary Beard was a disgusting barage of abuse that I don't believe was ever defended by anyone, in fact it was used as a shameful example of grown men trolling women they don't even know online.. I can only speak for myself but the twisted bullying of that lady shows how insecure and vicious men can be online when protected by anonymity.
I have spoken against what happened to her on DS and never deviated from my viewpoint which was disgust and revulsion at their attempt to bully and intimidate a woman for simply being herself.
Men who attempt to target women online are to be pitied. Their targets probably do pity them and certainly don't seek their attention. The case of Mary Beard was quite exceptional though, she befriended the worst most hostile troll and helped him find employment!
I admire her very much , not just for bravery against such cowards but ultimately for being able to forgive those who treated her so horribly when she had done nothing to them.
