I do think a lot of folks on forums have poor social skills. Or are at least introverted.
I wonder if forums actually help or hurt folks like that? It gives them an outlet to interact without leaving the house, which may or may not be a good thing.
Taking the OP seriously, I think you are right.
If a forum gives an introvert a platform to speak out, something they cant do in real life, well that's good.
As for it helping or hurting, that must depend on the sort of forums they join.
But it can also help fuel their fantasies. Again, not all bad, in moderation.

Forums can be good on many levels.
The downside would be if someone joins one because they are a bit introverted and then they are singled out for abuse. We all know forums that thrive on that.

I am at a total loss to think of such a forum Syl.

It’s all a bit fake though fuelling those fantasies. I see the ultimo fake NS and the big liar Clair are back and reinvented again. Do any of the big characters ever really leave or just lay in wait?

Why so vague?
If you know who NS and claire are now posting as. Why not name them...Maybe because you haven't a fucking clue?
Nobody listens to anyone on forums, anon or otherwise. It seems to be all about people trying to get the better of other people.
That's not true of forums where you have to give your real name or where moderators are paid though. They discuss specific topics snd you never get trolled etc.
Casual forums like this can be a lot of fun but you have to have a thick skin. You can't actually start to like a forum persona, no matter how many years you think you know someone.

I dont agree, I think you can learn a lot from other people, and on forums you can be talking to people you may never encounter in real life.
Not everyone on forums hides behind a persona, some people are genuine, what you see is what you get.

I know this is a silly fun thread and I won't ruin it but you make a valid point Maddog.
If people are lonely forums are great for having debates but if anyone is depressed or even too sensitive I would recommend they stick to DS and places where posters are kept in line. If someone is anxious or sensitive casual forums that allow trolling might actively hurt them. They have to take responsibility for that not blame the forum. It is what it is.

People don't always turn out to be who you think they are though, even if you think you know them.
I know a lot of people are themselves on forums, I didn't mean that. I think sometimes ppl take forums too seriously and get upset about things and other more sensible people don't take any thing to heart.
Not everyone is genuine, but I think if you post with someone long enough you get a good idea, and liars, or people hiding behind a persona usually give themselves away sooner or later.
I think you have to be pretty mentally robust to stick around on these kind of forums, they are not for everyone.
My advice to anyone would be if a forum is distressing you dont go on it.

I don't really the point in a persona, if you are going to post then post as yourself.

I think some people have to. And it helps with self preservation.
I was always myself when posting on forums and I regret it enormously. People claim to be 'true friends" etc but some forum types are fickle and it's only ever superficial.

They are good at covering up but not that good. I’m not going to spoil the fun of letting you figure it out for yourself. And it is obvious when you engage your brain instead of being spoonfed the answers.
