I am not techie at all....All I know is an ip gives an often vague indication of which area a person is posting from. When I spend summers in Wales my ip from there was always showing as somewhere in England, so an ip is not a reliable source of info if one wants to know where someone is based. My ip on here just shows Manchester....and I always use my own ip and always from the same base.
Only mods or admin can see other posters ip's anyway. there are just two of us on here with access to ip's. and neither of us would share anyones ip with anyone else.
Maybe Digger can give a better answer re ip's proxies and VPN'S...whatever they are.

So is there a risk or danger in using a normal IP on a forum, and what might that risk be?
Not only can admin get your house number from your IP address they can also get your National Insurance number too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Diggs I apologise for the use of the proxy, but I will now no longer use my IP on forums due to the threats I’ve had over the years. My partner also does not want me using it.
yes there are a lot on here and elsewhere that want me back. Thank you to all those. But I won’t come back into this atmosphere for my own well being yet, maybe at a later date.

An IP means nothing really, it's like saying OK, I live in London, go find me. Some people are far too worried about their IPs, mine often points to 800 km away from where I really am. So people please, do not worry about your IPs, no one will ever find you...ever!

The only way someone can find out where your exact address is is by going down the legal route via your provider. And the only way that will happen is via the police and claims of proven real life threats or harrassment. An IP only shows location of a general area. Of course, you'll get certain people with ACP butttons and delusions of grandeur who'll claim they can see more, but that's bullshit.
Digger let's most of the morning posts through, she is online earlier than me.
The only people who have access to ip's on here are obviously just me and Digger, it goes without saying we don't divulge anyone's ip to anyone else. It makes for far less confusion if people use their own ip, especially if we are expected to know who is posting as anon ....but obviously if you feel more settled using a proxy that's your choice.
It is her choice but by the same score, don't expect an anon proxy based guest post to get through. That's the benefit of posting with your own IP. If a guest does that, it's more likely to get approved.
A poster above said "I will now no longer use my IP on forums due to the threats I’ve had over the years. My partner also does not want me using it". So is there a risk or danger in using a normal IP on a forum, and what might that risk be?
What threats? The only people who can see the IPs are admin and mods. So if threats have been issued then it won't be from this forum. Anyone who actually threatens someone on line can be prosecuted if those threats are proven as life threatening, distress inducing and/or harrassment. Calling someone a cunt doesn't count.

I just checked your IP and it mentions 'seven inches'. Is that your shoe size?

That's not really true though is it. Wasn't your address and pictures of the front of your house posted on dogs?
That's how stooo used to dox people. He would gather any info he could (even getting his forum friends to ask innocent questions) and then he would search FB and other forums to see if you left any clues.
He was also good at splitting up forum friendships and then getting the old friend to pass on personal info to him. I'd make a guess and say he has a lot of personal info on HF now due to their little tete'a'tete's. He has her phone number, I'd say her address and some private info she must likely shared.

When people are doxed, like you say info is gathered by what one has told others, not by an ip number.
I think Facebook is probably one of the most popular ways to prowl round looking for info on others....one reason why I'm not on it.

Too many people believe everything they see written on forums!

Social media is one of the best ways to dox someone. If you make the mistake of giving someone your social media contacts, and that person then turns on you or does the dirty, that's the backdoor people use to gather info. It's got absolutely nothing to do with your IP.

Well at least you are honest!
