"Corrine Priest, who starred in Les Misérables in the West End, claims she was followed and harassed by a man after she complained about people not wearing face masks on the Tube. Video footage  shows the man calling her a 'posh c***' and a 'sl**' as she walked home from Hendon Tube Station in London last November. Ms Priest (right) says she gave officers the suspect's name and telephone number, and footage of his appearance on a television dating show. But four months on from the incident, she says Scotland Yard still refuse to 'take this kind of thing seriously.' Her comments come amid fury over the force's handling of a vigil held on Saturday evening for Sarah Everard on Clapham Common."

He wouldn't have done that to a a large man.

Speaking of men, We need to do better at calling these fuckers out.

As I've gotten older I have mellowed quite a bit, but I still can't stand fucking bullies. You mess with someone because they are weaker than you, and I'll jump down your throat.

My daughters have seen me go ballistic on a guy talking shit to them (so have two of my son in laws so they know how crazy I can get wink

While I'm not making excuses, I think a lot of men are of the mindset that women are supposed to handle their own shit because they are equal. I don't care how progressive you are, you are a damn fool if you think the typical woman is able to physically handle an aggressive male. They need allies in that department. Men need to step up. You don't even have to be physical. Just asking the guy to leave her alone will work more times than not.

Great post. You have daughters and you can clearly see this from a female point of view.

It's a shame that many people dont seem to realise that this is a mans problem just as much as a woman's.

The men who talk to a woman with disrespect perpetrate this  age old belief that women can be sexually abused at the whim of men, and I honestly do believe it's gotten worse for young women today than it was for my generation.

I think the internet has a lot to do with that.

By stopping it on radio and television by making it unacceptable for the Benny Hills and Bernard Manning types by theaters and television censoring comedians not allowing them space.

Seemed like a small thing at the time.

Seemed like a small invasion of free speech but it worked and the result being we have largely defeated that kind of speech now so I find it a little odd when people think the Benny Hill type jokes and innuendo are acceptable regarding women.

 It was of it's time.

Benny Hill humour was like saucy postcard humour, times change and what some people found harmless fun is now considered very un pc.

I dont recall Benny Hill ever using the word Paki...and I have never heard the word purr used unless it's  to describe the sound a cat makes.

Exactly it was of it's time and deemed to be time for the dustbin of history like the then acceptable use of words lik n i **er and Paki.

So you agree times change and times must now change and it's time to accept smut aimed at women is no longer acceptable but you're not ready to accept that change yet.

Are you still on about Benny Hill, Carry on, Saucy postcard type of humour??

Yes it's out of fashion now, it's considered very un pc, and many people find it offensive. It didn't bother me then and it doesn't bother me now, and if that offends you.....tough.

As for the derogatory words used to describe none white people....I have never used them even when they were in fashion, so to me you are talking of two different subjects.

Yes I'm still going on about it.

It didn't just fade away it was forced away as no longer acceptable and what the fuck does whether or not you ever used such words have to do with the fact it was common and mostly acceptable in my lifetime for many?

You keep fucking going on about how you don't find it offensive so woopy do for you you're a fucking dinosaur who doesn't understand why we needed those changes for the sake of peaceful race relations with one topic and it worked and theatres and tv no longer giving a platform to the fucking misogynistic sleazeballs on the other who you deem to be perfectly fine.

I've just come in whilst listening to Jeremy Vine in the car thank fuck the women on there agree with my thinking and not your rosy glow of history.

Don't change any of it Syl, only way you'll understand.

Then there's this. Apart from the fact that the music, if you can call it that, is utter shite...it seems all that's left to these performers is to writhe around making sexual gestures as though it makes them kinda....sexy?   Below is a still from the overtly sexual show put on by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallions at the Grammy awards 2021.  I'm not sure how sexy a bloke might think that is but as a woman I think it's crass and the most unsexy thing a woman can do.

Kids are watching this and no doubt being influenced at too early an age for them to see how truly grotesque it is, and that it's not empowering for women at all...it's just plain irresponsible.

40473466-9365767-Bedroom_music_Cardi_B_2

Call me a 'ho but don't treat me like one? I can act like a 'ho but treat me like a lady? It's a very very thin line as to where respect starts and ends at the moment. It should be OK for women to walk down the street stark naked twerking all the way and not get molested, jeered at and stalked or raped but it isn't. It never has and it never will be.

I think most of us here are adults exchanging our experiences, our knowledge and our opinions.   Some people when writing comments also express emotion, and some people that express emotion in there comments also start attacking others here commenting.  At that point the "discussion" can descend into personal attacks and whatever was being discussed becomes a secondary issue.

Yes I did laugh at that stuff and yes I did call the corner shop the Paki shop even if the guy behind the counter was Indian.

If we hadn't been educated to change we probably still would be.

The reason being is few of us realised how crass how demeaning it was until we had it pointed out to us.

It's called education and the vast majority of us needed educating and nudging along in the desired direction.

As for slagging off females online you don't get a free ride by using your sexuality as you well know.

As for the problem under discussion there isn't a snowball in hells chance of changing anything without education and without changing what was once acceptable.

It is no longer acceptable to do the Benny Hill stuff and I fail to understand why you don't understand that.

The days of sexual innuendo have to be over because it is nearly all aimed at women and we're trying to figure out how we make women safe and how we get the Neanderthals amongst us to understand that.

The scale of misogyny is much higher than people realise. Boys and porn is a major problem in secondary schools, particularly private schools right now.

I wonder if people realise that in England and Wales  only 3% of reported rapes actually make it to the courts?

And people think it’s not a problem. Most aren’t reported for that very reason. Victims are shamed and not believed.

What a surprise.  bored

As for many female music videos over the last few decades they are more like pornography than selling the song - endless examples too many to list, Blondie and others were very sexy without being obscene.

It hardly sets a good young girls does it and must influence the ways young boys seen girls and women?

As for gangsta rap I can't even be bothered in almost every rap video i have bothered to see (for about 10 seconds) there are scores of semi naked women gyrating around some criminal thug in piles of 'bling' spouting repulsive, misogynistic/violent shit in a highly aggressive manner.

But we all know why that 'artform' gets a free pass from the critics.

The issue on this thread is women being afraid to walk the streets, not having the freedom to simply go about their lives without the fear of male interference.

It doesn't have to be a physical attack, it can be words that some (a minority) of men use to try to demean a woman.

It happens in the streets and it happens on forums.....until men begin to respect women more it wont stop.

Seems the message that women are giving out loud and clear is not hitting home yet to some police officers.

"A woman has claimed she was flashed by a man on her way home from the Sarah Everard vigil, only to be shunned by a male police officer.
She said the man exposed himself as she was walking next to Clapham Common, where hundreds of women had gathered to remember the 33-year-old marketing executive.
The 27-year-old woman, who gave her name as Georgina, told Lambeth Life that a female police officer said it ‘would be looked into’ when she reported it. But she claims a male officer then allegedly told her: ‘No, we’ve had enough tonight with the rioters.’ She claimed: ‘I was just shocked to be told essentially to go away. ‘Even if they said, “We’re not going to go into it but we’ll walk you” – that would have been something.’
She said the alleged incident made her feel ‘unsafe’ and scared around the police, when she should have felt ‘protected’. The woman added that she reported the officer to the Met Police who set up a meeting."
